An Open Letter To My First College Best Friend

And one too many thank you's

An Open Letter To My First College Best Friend

I just want to you give you a massive thank you. Thank you for the awkward first couple meals, the “this is my family” photos, and the endless support this year. I know we're both so incredibly far from home, and sometimes we were our own little family, but I cannot tell you how much that helped the first few weeks. I never thought I would meet a best friend in the first months of school, but now I know you were placed in my life for a very specific reason. For the late night conversations while I slept on your futon, to the endless boy gossiping and advice you have given me, thank you. I wouldn’t trade any of those memories for all the money in the world, and I am so excited to see where the next few years take us! From going on adventures around town, to getting ourselves into some sticky situations, you are my better half.

First semester was a little rocky, for both of us, and home seemed the closest thing to familiarity. I cannot tell you how much you letting me stay over for days on end helped the homesickness. Becoming close with your roommate was also comforting, and meeting all your dorm friends, as well. Regardless of getting to know one another in the beginning, I am so happy for the current memories we are making. From spring break with one another, to late night food runs and TV show obsessions, you are my rock. I do not know who I would have become in college if I did not have the pleasure of knowing you, and having you become not only my best friend, but my little slice of family.

Summer will be hard; you will go half way across the globe and I will go half way across the country, but I know we can do it. You mean more to me than the amount of miles we are apart after this semester, or the time difference that may separates us. You’re the kind of best friend I see being by my side for forever. We joke and say how we will be in one another’s weddings, how our kids will grow up together and we will live on as best friends, and I cannot wait for those days to come. You are my forever friend and I cannot tell you how much that means to me. I came so far from home, to attend college in a brand new world, because I never felt like I found people who really got me, for being me. I had two extraordinarily close friends back home, but I felt like those were the only two who truly understood me or cared for me. I left home for a reason, and I think it was to find people like you. I believe it was to find people who brought out in the good in me, rather than the bad. From the inside jokes, movie marathons, and matching t-shirts, I love you with all my heart and cannot wait to see who you become and what other wonderful memories and stories we will have to tell in the future.

Sincerely,

Your first college best friend XO

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
