An Open Letter To My Family For When I Come Home

Dear family,

I’m going to start by saying that I love being away from home at college. I’m sorry that I have not been home much this semester and please do not take it personally that I have fallen in love with the campus that I live on.

No matter how much I love it here, you know I’ll be coming home for thanksgiving break and Christmas and I hope you’re ready for me.

I just need you all to remember that college changes people sometimes. I may have picked up new foods that I like, new language, and a whole lot of stress. I might not be the same girl that you watched drive away a couple months ago. Since then I have grown as a person and I continue growing by the day.

Please don’t be offended if I sleep a lot or act moody. I’m tired. It has been an extremely busy semester full of school, work, and extracurricular activities. I am coming home for these breaks and have been sleeping 3-5 hours a night and I have a lot of catching up (and getting ahead) to do. Remember, this is the only time of the semester I have more than a few hours to relax before I remember that I have to complete and assignment or study for an exam.

Oh, and don’t forget, I’ve been away from home and I miss my friends almost as much as I miss you all. I’m very excited to see my friends but don’t think I didn’t miss you guys nearly as much.

I’m so ready for family holiday parties as well. I can’t wait to be around my loved ones again since I have not seen them since before I moved into school. It’s only October and I’m making my Christmas shopping plans as we speak.

This Thanksgiving I will be thankful that I have a loving family that allows me to pursue my dreams and supports me from a distance. I would not be here if it wasn’t for the love, care, and support that you guys give me every step of the way.

Christmas is also extra exciting when you spend time away from home prior, because the presence of your loved ones is the best gift that I could ask for. I can not wait to wake up on Christmas morning and enjoy a coffee with you, Mom. Not only am I excited for Christmas, but I’m excited for the three weeks that I will be home and able to spend time with you all.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I really love being away at college, but I’m also really ready to be home. No matter how far I stray from home I’ll always want to come back. No matter how long I’m away, whether it be a few weeks like it has been, or years, I’ll always be excited to welcome myself back home.

With love,

Me

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
