An Open Letter To Cancer

You lost this game.

An Open Letter To Cancer

Dear Cancer,

You are defined as "A disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue," but you are far much more than that.

You are like a tornado of pain, devastation and agony of not knowing where tomorrow may take you. Your tactics are so pathetic, as you make the disease a game. You are very competitive so you find a strong opponent to play your evil game. You roll the dice and you skip a head three or four stages, or you lose a turn and are left just lingering around. When the game comes to an end you mysteriously find a way to cheat your way to the top.

You are most certainly not a fair player and you can never be forgiven for the pain you have casted over a numerous amount of lives. You do not just affect the person who is diagnosed, but you break down a whole community of people: family, friends and those who are just acquaintances. All of these people are impacted because you take such a tole on a person's mind. Watching someone get weaker and weaker as days go on messes with someone's head especially when there is nothing that you can possibly do about it. When someone is diagnosed with your game you call a disease you change that person's daily lifestyle. You make them a slave to you while they undergo treatments and there are times when you give them false hope.

You make me sick. You attack people of all kinds: mothers, fathers and even children. Do you feel good about yourself by weakening someone's bones? Making their hair fall out? Or even becoming so strong you take away their ability to walk and talk so they are bedridden? Do you think that gives you power? Because I can assure you, taking away someone's life makes you so miserably inadequate. I do not think you know what it is like going to sleep every night and having to pray and beg God for a miracle that the person you love does not have to face the pain you caused them for much longer. I do not think you know what it is like to lose a parent, grandparent, brother, sister or child in such a horrible way. I do not think you know what it is like to watch someone slowly take their last breath because you have entered their innocent body.

I am waiting for the day the dice gets taken out of your own hands and you come to an end. I've seen you take down the strongest person I know but you certainly did not win. You may have taken their body down physically but you did not deteriorate their mind and soul.

You lost this game.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
