How The 'Creative Impressions' Organization Changed My Life

I could say thank you a million times and it still wouldn't suffice.

How The 'Creative Impressions' Organization Changed My Life
Creative Impressions

During the summer before seventh grade I found something special. Something that I didn't think I would cherish as much as I did now. I found a group of talented singers and performers, I found a mentor and a teacher, I found a family.

Now that I've officially passed over member to alumna, I think it's time to write a thank you letter to Creative Impressions, a "501 (c)(3) non-profit performance arts organization of approximately thirty (30) teenagers of diverse backgrounds is led by a local music professional. Through weekly training sessions, a focus on excellence, a belief in youth development, community support, hard work, and committed leadership, the organization is turning visions of possibilities into exciting realities" based in Augusta, GA.

It's crazy to look back and see how far I've come as a member of this organization; I had no idea the impact Creative Impressions, better known as "CI," would have on my life. My mom dropped me off at a church one Thursday night and let me sit on a rehearsal. I was amazed by the group to say the least. They sang "Lioness Hunt" from the famous Broadway musical The Lion King and they sounded like professionals as opposed to twenty or so teenagers gathered together. That night I joined the group and started attending rehearsals every Thursday night. I dreaded it. I felt intimidated and shy. Not only was everyone older than me, but their voices were far more mature compared to my young, small voice. I could never imagine myself being as great as them. I could never picture myself with a solo or teaching parts to my section. But I guess that's what makes this story funny because I soon began to do all the things I thought I'd never do.

I owe all the thanks in the world to my director, Trey McLaughlin. Trey is the most talented person I know; he's a gospel recording artist, the music director of his church, and an international clinician who travels to places I'd never imagine going. He does all these things and yet, he still gives back to the group that he grew up in himself. Not only has Trey taught me to be a better musician, soloist, and leader, but he's made sure that I'm knowledgable and proud of my culture as well. We sing various types of music from musical theater to music by Rene Clausen, but because we are a majority African-American group we perform many spirituals and pieces by black composers. We have been taught so much black history, not only in rehearsal, but also on our annual college tours. During spring break we travel to HBCU's across the east coast doing choir exchanges, performing, and learning the history of the various cities. Every given moment was used as an learning opportunity in this group.

I could probably write an entire book about why I love this group so much. My Thursdays for the past six years of my life have been made worthwhile by learning music, hilarious inside jokes no one else beside CI members would understand, pass or fails, getting fussed out by Trey, pure worship, and so much more. I am so thankful to have found a family in Creative Impressions. This isn't a goodbye because I know I will always have a place in this organization. But from the bottom of my heart I really do want to say thank you to Trey, the board and my peers. You all have truly impacted my life.

I love my CI.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
