An Open Letter To The Boys Who Are Amused By This Image

Last Sunday I was surfing the Net to find a picture that would match one of my writer's articles. I came across the above picture. It is apparently one of many pictures like it that have been appearing all over the Internet since 2012, and possibly even before that.

The meme is called 2/10 Would Not Bang. Did your heart just sink into your stomach, ladies? Mine sure did, and now I'm writing an open letter to the boys who find this meme funny.

Dear Boys Who Relish In Defeating The Self-Esteem Of Women,

Congratulations. You've successfully made an Internet meme that went viral and managed to stay somewhat "relevant." Funny stuff. Your funny stuff, by the way, isn't that funny. Not in the slightest.

How is it that you fail to realize the remarks you make about each photo are things women actually brood about on a day-to-day basis? If you don't realize this you either don't have a mother, sister, or friends who are girls, or your empathy and attentiveness are extremely lackluster.

I'm fully aware that you think you're being satirical, and I'm fully aware of the definition of "satire," but at the expense of what and whom are you making jokes? The expense of a woman's self-esteem which, by the way, is already built on shifting sands.

Let me explain something to you.

You thrive on the attention from women, sexual or otherwise. So you pursue us until you get that attention. Because we thrive on the feeling of being wanted, we give you attention, and what do you do? You take advantage of it. The amount of times I have been coaxed into an uncomfortable situation is unreal. A lot of women don't feel the need to amuse your desire for our attention by giving you all of us. There are much better, more mature ways of giving you our attention, but that is an idea I don't think resonates with you. Not yet, at least.

The point is that you flourish on our attention, but you do nothing to merit it. Even worse, you say utterly disrespectful things like, "2/10 would not bang..." And, for reasons which, by the way, are beyond superficial. Furthermore, some of the comments you make are just downright inappropriate, and in the case of this picture, laced with racial bigotry (see: "Jew nose" comment). Do you see the problem here?

There will come a day when you meet a girl you deem is worth the best of you, whom you decide you would 10/10 bang or, even more so, you decide you would 10/10 date. You're going to blow it because of your immaturity. Surely, no self-respecting woman would date a guy who thinks it's okay to judge a woman's appearance for shits and gigs.

My advice? Man up.

Stop assuming that you can say and do whatever you want with zero consequence, because that is not the case. Stop assuming that women are made of steel and find immature "satire" as funny as you do, because that's the not the case.

I sit here wondering if you ever, in your juvenile decision to create this meme, considered the effects of using the woman of choice's photo to roast. Did you realize how sad she would be upon discovering the meme? Did you realize that you were singlehandedly going to change how that woman is going to look at herself in the mirror, possibly for the rest of her life?

Again, congratulations, boys. Not only have you managed to create a ridiculous meme, you've also managed to piss off a lot of women by making us feel worthless.

Glad you're amused because we're not.

-Kate

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
