An Open Letter To The Adventurer In My Soul

Dear wandering soul,

As the New Year has come about, it has had me reflecting on the things I want to accomplish before 2016 ends. One of my ‘resolutions’ is to travel more. I use the term more as loosely as possible. I have never been out of the country yet I find myself completely enthralled with the idea of experiencing other cultures and seeing other countries. I would not say it is a sense of restlessness, but rather a search for knowledge of how the world lives. I can only hope this will be one resolution that comes to fruition. Coming from a relatively small town has encouraged my imagination about the rest of the world to thrive. To follow is what traveling the world, would mean to a girl who has traveled more than a couple hundred miles from home.

We have all heard quotes related to the benefits of travel. My favorite is, “To travel is to live” coined by Hans Christian Anderson. Ever since reading this quote, it has captivated me. The idea that life has so much to offer beyond my front door is intriguing. As far as I have seen, this phrase could not be truer. Over the years, I have had numerous friends and family members travel, study abroad, and even move overseas. When they return home I am in awe of their stories and adventures. I want that. I want to be able to encounter people I have never met before. I want to see amazing feats of architecture completed hundreds of years ago. I want to create the memories of being completely immersed in a strange place and having to figure things out on my own. I would love to learn from other cultures and experience their traditions and what they hold sacred. I long to experience new things. Even learning more about where I live would be an exhilarating adventure. Getting lost (not in a critical sense) for a couple of hours while exploring a trail or new city sounds like the perfect way to spend a couple of days.

It may take several years for me to accomplish all aspects of this resolution. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Starting closer to home, nearer my comfort zone is an excellent place to start. Yet I know that no matter how long it takes, there will always be the fire of adventure and the calling to travel great distances in my soul.
