Now that Thanksgiving is officially over, it's much more socially acceptable for me to do what I've already been doing for weeks: get excited for Christmas. With that in mind, here are 14 songs that will provide the perfect soundtrack for you to make hot chocolate, put up some lights, and decorate your tree.
1. Snowed In With You - Over The Rhine
I first heard this song when my former dance teacher played it in class, which is actually how I was introduced to a surprising amount of music (thanks, Jordan). It's not a traditional Christmas song, but it's one of my favorites, and it's perfect for shower singing.
2. What Are You Doing New Year's Eve - The Head and the Heart
The Head and the Heart's rendition of this semi-classic holiday song is soft and sweet and pretty, and it's perfect to listen to in that week between Christmas and New Year's when Christmas music is no longer appropriate but you're still feeling festive.
3. Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney
It's Paul McCartney singing a Christmas classic; what more could you want?
4. The Christmas Waltz - She & Him
This is another one I was introduced to via dance class, and another favorite. It's great for Christmas-themed choreography, and also great for everything else. It's just great.
5. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Michael Buble
There's just something about Michael Buble singing Christmas songs that I will never stop loving, and this song is the epitome of that.
6. Believe - Josh Groban
Most people will recognize this from the "Polar Express" soundtrack (all of which is also great holiday music), and it resonates with those of us who are growing up but still want to believe in the magic of Christmas.
7. What Christmas Means to Me - Stevie Wonder
Who doesn't need a little Wonder in their Christmas?
8. Winter Wonderland - Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga
Say what you want about Lady Gaga, but the girl can sing. Obviously, so can Tony Bennett, but that's not news to anyone.
9. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon
John Lennon, Christmas, and existential questions. Everything I love.
10. Baby It's Cold Outside - Idina Menzel and Michael Buble
I know this song is creepy and date-rape-y and very unfeminist of me, but it's still my favorite Christmas song, and these two do it better than anyone else (although the Norah Jones/Willie Nelson is a close second).
11. Santa Stole My Girlfriend - The Maine
Essential throwback to the pop-punk phase we all had.
12. A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss) - Glasvegas
Scottish accents singing a wintry lament? Sign me up.
13. White Christmas - Bright Eyes
Another age-old song covered by a band I love; Bright Eyes does "White Christmas" in a way that's both new and classic.
14. All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey
I mean, obviously.
