In the digital realm, where everyone spends most of their time to spare, the challenge of a creator becomes to tap that market. On Instagram and various other social media outlets, artist post websites that act as stores for people to buy their art. I was already using my social media to showcase my art, so I was already one step in the right direction. From this point, there was an infinite amount of pathways I could take in order to sell my art, so I asked a few good artists I knew on the steps they took to sell their art.
The marketplace most people suggested was a website called bigcartel.com. To get accompanied with the website, I watched plenty of YouTube videos on how to set up an account. Then I encountered another issue in the midst of watching videos, how was I going to make prints and have those prints shipped to a customer. That is when I discovered another website called Printable, which printed what was being ordered. I linked these two websites together and I was set up.
The next step was finding how the currency would flow. Looking again at other artist websites I found that the most common pay option was PayPal. I never trusted PayPal, but since I needed it in order to get my art out for sale I gave it a try. There were plenty of steps into setting up an account, more steps than most accounts made online.
After all this the website was laid out and ready, I finally needed to put product on the market. I uploaded one of my pieces I already scanned and wrote a description on big cartel. After that I synched that product with printable, so whenever someone would order a print on big cartel, printable would automatically print and ship the product.
Now that I had a shop set up with product, I advertised on my social media. I’ll keep adding more products and advertise sales as the summer days get hotter and hopefully someone will walk into my digital shop for some cool air and great art.
