Life is hard for normal people, but for the ones that feel things a bit too much, it can be even harder. What others can simply brush off, makes you want to cry. Then, to make matters worse, you feel incredibly stupid and weak for wanting to cry. The emotional roller coaster is exhausting. It's great when you're happy, because it feels like nothing could ever go wrong, but when something does, it is like the world is ending.
It's even worse when people point it out.
"Stop freaking out."
"You're overreacting."
"Stop being so sensitive."
"Just suck it up and get over it."
You know you are overreacting and being irrational, but you can't help it. You try to hide it, because you don't want anyone to know how much something bothers you. So you suppress it as much as you can, making it 1,000,000,000 times worse. You go through all this, because you have been told being sensitive is wrong and a bad thing.
They LIED.
Being sensitive is the way you were made. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. You shouldn't be trying to change such an important part of who you are out of fear of being judged and talked down to. Yes, it can be tough and annoying at times, but there are also many strengths that come with being sensitive.
You can see things in others that most people don't notice. Because you know all the tricks on how to hide your emotions, you can see that in other people too. That helps you relate to others and build stronger relationships. You aren't afraid of your emotions, so you aren't afraid of pushing others to tell you what they are truly feeling.
All of those things can seem like a burden at times. But they can also be some of your greatest strengths. Not everyone can handle feeling the things that you feel, even though you think you can't handle it half the time. It can make you so much stronger when you stop running from it. You can't make it go away. Learn to take the things that everyone else views as a weakness and make them your biggest assets.
Being sensitive is who you are. It's okay. Embrace it. You aren't alone. There are a lot of us out there.
