Odyssey is a social discovery platform committed to democratizing content creation while personalizing discovery. I'm the Editor in Chief for my school's Odyssey community and, while working with my contributing editors, am able to gather unique voices and have them published on this well-known site.
Launched in June 2014 by college students (Adrian France and Evan Burns) Odyssey was founded to change mainstream media and increase user engagement by opening the door to any person and allowing them to share their perspective on the world through weekly articles.
I enjoy writing about travel and pop culture, but my fellow content creators' pieces range from mental health awareness to antique shopping. Publishing over 50,000 pieces of content per month, Odyssey is a cross between a social media network and a news blog. To put it simply, it can be described by some as a college newspaper on steroids.
These articles are written by over 14,000 content creators who all come from varying backgrounds. Currently, the vast majority of writers are college students or young alumni, but this isn't a requirement.
My community represents the student body and young alumni of Gustavus Adolphus College, a small liberal arts school in rural Minnesota. Our team is very young at only two months old, but we're slowly growing and establishing our place in the large realm of online publishing. We hope to expand more as the next school year rolls around, reaching out to the diverse student body and searching for strong and unique new viewpoints. In general, Odyssey's "content creators" (AKA writers) are grouped into more than 1,000 local communities across the nation.
With the help of content creators sharing their articles on a variety of mainstream social media platforms, 30 MILLION unique visitors browse this amazing site each and every month! Although the majority of sharing and interaction with articles takes place on Facebook; Twitter, Pinterest and even LinkedIn are popular places to find Odyssey articles!
Generally, Odyssey targets millennial audiences between the ages of 18-34.
Fun Fact: Odyssey recently raised 25 million dollars to push its technology within the company to new heights, look for Odyssey Video and maybe even an app coming soon.
