Student government affects all levels of student life at the University of South Carolina, and The Odyssey is excited to have the opportunity to endorse the best man for the job: Jonathan Holt.
Beyond well-designed websites and artistic campaign videos, candidates need to have effective platforms, and it is clear that Holt has the clearest and most achievable goals for the student body. Having served in leadership positions within student government before, he not only understands the ins and outs of the system now, but also knows how it can be improved.
Some of his best ideas are as follows:
- Payment plans for parking passes. Don't want to pay $720 upfront for a yearly pass in Bull? Yeah, we don't either.
- Greek Village parking solutions. Tired of driving all the way to GV to grab some lunch or dinner, not finding a parking spot, and then finding a yellow ticket on your windshield? While it's going to take some time to create a workable solution, his commitment to the problem is a step in the right direction.
- Free water at football games. You may be wondering why this isn't already a thing. Let's make it happen.
- A clearly defined student section at basketball games. Again, why isn't this already a thing?
Holt has also demonstrated a willingness to work with other student body leaders to craft solutions to the problems facing our campus, and that is a key characteristic for someone potentially representing an entire university.
