Why Odyssey Doesn't Actually Suck
Den of Geek

I’ve heard plenty of opinions about Odyssey, a fair amount of both pros and cons. I’ve done my best to consider as many viewpoints as possible, and while my being a content creator may indeed make me biased, I still find that the pros of writing for Odyssey come out on top. With that in mind, here are some things about Odyssey that, when you get down to it, don’t actually suck.

You can write anything you want!

Literally anything. Politics, poetry, polar bears, and peanut butter — they’re all up for grabs! That is, unless someone else in your community called it first. Then you should probably come up with something else, not only to avoid blasting the same topic over and over again on social media, but also because you just don’t want to interfere with a determined content creator’s brainstorming. Seriously. I would know.

(I wouldn’t know. People are nice, I swear.)

Anyway, the point is: freedom.

You can make your voice heard!

In actuality, this is one of the best reasons to join Odyssey. There are so many closet writers out there creating original, insightful pieces that only they get to read. And that, in my opinion, is a waste of lovely talent. Odyssey allows you to express your ideas and your opinions to an actual audience. That can only lead to more insights and creation… so join the conversation!

You control who sees your article!

Okay, let’s be honest, sometimes you don’t want the whole world to witness your writing. Odyssey leaves it up to you to share your piece on social media, and while it’s a given that we want a large audience to read your amazing content, you still have the final word in whether that audience includes, say, your gif-condemning grandmother three states over. Still, the important thing to remember at the end of it all is to write what’s worth sharing.

It’s not time-consuming!

We’re in college. We have commitment issues for good reason. But never fear — Odyssey exists for you, not just for your content. Contributing is super manageable, and creating an article on a topic you care about isn’t nearly as laborious as writing a research paper for one of your English courses. (Disclaimer: I have yet to take an English course, but I’m assuming the research papers are indeed laborious.)

You can meet cool people who also enjoy writing!

Such a rare quality these days, I know. Your Odyssey community will keep you creatively (in)sane. It’s a hub for exchanging ideas, reactions, and things to try next — not to mention, once you join, you’ve got a brand-new realm of homies who respect the value of the written word.

It almost sounds too good to be true… almost.

Come on, take the leap! We’re doing some awesome stuff over here.

You really Odyssey it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
