Around August of last year, I noticed that one of my good friends from high school was writing for this publication called Odyssey. I thought it was so cool because I had seen a bunch of their articles and now one of my friends was writing for them. She wrote some really great pieces and I was so excited each week when she shared them. All of her articles seemed like they were really pure and personal to things that she loved to write about.
So I thought, I want to do that. So I applied around January and got a call from a girl named Jessica. She interviewed me over the phone and really explained the purpose of Odyssey. I have her to thank for going through and taking on such a big commitment. Even over the phone, I knew that I wanted a career with Odyssey. Jessica was so friendly and personable, we talked about our dogs and I just thought that this is the type of person I'd want to work for.
So a few weeks go by after I was hired and I'm loving it. Around the end of February I get an email from Jess saying that our team will be getting a new Managing Editor (we'll get to how great she is in a second) and she asked if I would like to apply to be EIC.
I almost died. This was such a huge opportunity for me, I was so excited but terrified at the same time. I had never held such a huge leadership position and I was afraid to reply to the email because I just thought, "I'm not good enough" However, a few seconds later, I got a spike of courage. it could've been the two extra shots of espresso in my latte but it doesn't matter. I responded and said that I would love the opportunity.
So I got a call from our new Managing Editor, Angelina, for my interview. Again, the same outgoing personality, friendly, and just all around bubbly person. Angelina explained everything that I'd be taking on as an EIC if I were to get hired and that helped me so much. The one thing I won't forget about the call was when I told her that I was actually scared to apply and she respected that so much. I was so relieved once we got off the phone and she said that Id hear from her if I got the position at the beginning of the next week. I was so scared and I probably annoyed her a little while I was waiting to hear back.
Tuesday came and I couldn't believe my eyes. I was chosen to be the EIC for my school's team! I was shaking and in tears and called my mom and she was so proud. I couldn't believe that Angelina saw that much potential in me to hire me for such a huge position. I was beyond ecstatic.
For a while I just felt like I didn't really serve a purpose. I was just going to school, doing work and just being a broke college student. But now I feel like I actually am contributing something to the world. Even if it's just by writing and publishing articles from my small private college. So far, our team has made a really huge impact. We've had a handful of articles that have gone viral and to say that I'm apart of such an amazing and creative group of people is more than I could ever want in life. We also have a really amazing ME that always makes sure we are on top of our game not only with numbers, but she makes sure that everyone is inspired and excited to write. Thank you Angelina, you constantly inspire me encourage me to be the best that I can be.
Thank you to my team, without you guys I'd be lost. You guys are the reason I appreciate and love what I do even more. You guys never fail to intrigue me and make me proud. You guys each have an amazing talent and I'm so glad you've shared it with me. Thank you to my family and friends as well, you guys always ask me questions and are always online to share all of the pieces I post, you guys rock.
Lastly, thank you to Odyssey. Odyssey is really about giving a voice to millennials and sharing content that isn't always news oriented. I really appreciate that because I love being able to write about things that I enjoy, writing with Odyssey is never a chore. I always told myself that I wanted a job that never felt like a job, and I think I've found one. Thank you.
