An Ode To Spring In Carolina

An Ode To Spring In Carolina

The return to school after spring break marks the beginning of one of the best times of the year. With only seven weeks left of second semester, summer is right around the corner.

Most college students long for a spring break at the beach— a chance to finally get some sun after a long, cold winter. While not everyone has the privilege of a week filled with sand and sun, students return to school feeling refreshed and excited. Spring is here and the warm weather has finally arrived.

No more dead trees, heavy coats, or days spent stuck inside. The temperature is rising along with our attitudes. Campus seems so much more beautiful filled with sunshine and students galore. The walk to class is more enjoyable and we are all anxious to get out and experience all that our campus and city have to offer. School is less taxing when the day revolves around more than just going to and from class.

Whether you prefer shopping around in Five Points, hanging out on the horseshoe, or just eating dinner outside in Greek Village, the days seem brighter. There are so many more activities to do now that the dreary winter weather is behind us. We can go tan at the pool, raft on the river, or picnic in the park. With Carolina Cup, beach weekends, functions and formals to look forward to, weekends are more enjoyable. Not to mention, we also have more hours to be out and about— the days are longer meaning so are the nights.

Most people are naturally happier when the weather is warmer. My heart skips a beat when I think about these next seven weeks and all the adventures to come. It's important to focus on studies, but isn't it so much easier to do so when we can on the horseshoe or outside with friends? Don't weeks fly by with fun filled weekends ahead? Football season is surely a crowd favorite and a time to be cherished, but we can't forget about the spring.

The University of South Carolina is a beautiful campus and about to hit its peak time of year. Spring is when I first visited and decided to come to Carolina and that attractive, lively atmosphere is what made me fall in love with this wonderful place. There are only a few short months until summer and they're going to fly by. Get out and make the most of them!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
