Who knew you would embark, at the age of five, on the road to a friendship that would last a lifetime ?
Finding a best friend is rare and something you should hold onto and never let go. But finding a best friend who sticks with you for more than fifteen years? Nearly impossible.
We do not go to the same college and the miles have nothing on a friendship that saw me through my awkward stage, helped me collect debris from my braces and grew up along side me. I thank God every day for these amazing people I can call my own, who have supported me in becoming the person I am today. Nearly babies at introduction, now full-fledged adults ready to tackle the world together.
I do not know where life is going to take me, as I am still young myself, but I have this amazing support system that is more like a family to me than friends. My parents look at them as their own. My actual siblings treat them like they are another addition to the family. Life in general, would not be the same without them.
These were your hardest goodbyes on your pack up for school and your warmest hello on your holidays home.
My elementary school best friends carry with them some of the best memories of my childhood and remind me of the sentimental side that I often need to reconnect with.
It’s not every day that you find someone who knows you better than you know yourself. The bond I have with my childhood best friends is one that will forever humble me. They keep me grounded, and though it's sometimes hard, they tell me the things that I need to hear.
A life without my childhood best friends would be a life without the constant reminder of my youth. A life without my childhood best friends would be a life that never taught me about the person I would one day hope to be. A life without my childhood best friends would be a life without people who saw me at my worst and still cared for me regardless.
We've been best friends since age five, and the rest is history.
It says a lot that after fifteen years these buddies are still my cheerleaders and number one fans. These people I once shared crayons with, I am now sharing my future with. It seems as though no amount of time can erode the foundation of my elementary school friendships.
Growing up is really tough, but when you find the right group of people to make it a little more bearable, coming of age can be pretty worthwhile. They may be more far away now, but the years of friendship have made the distance effortless. To say I am the luckiest would simply be an understatement.
They say to always remember where you came from. Luckily, I have a few of the best humans on Earth to remind me of why where I call home is so great. Thank you, to the people who stuck with me through my awkward of years and went through life with me, during my best years.
Cheers, to my very first best friends.
