Since I've been around some of these towns for most of my life, I've become so immune to the oddity of these town names. However, for all the non-Massholes, enjoy.
1. Florida
Yeah, this is an actual town I didn’t know existed until this year. It’s in Western Mass so it figures.
2. Satan’s Kingdom
This is an “unincorporated community” in Northfield and no one’s quite sure why it’s called this.
3. Egypt
Now part of Scituate, there’s only one country store that still acknowledges the former town name.
4. Belchertown
It sounds funny, alright?
5. Mashpee
Who would look at a town and say, “This looks like it should be named after a smushed vegetable”?
6. Peru
No need to go to South America in order to visit the exotic Peru. You don’t even need to known Spanish here. Though, it is a plus!
7. Sandwich
Yeah, just plain old Sandwich. It was clearly a slow day when it was named.
8. Blubber Hollow
Now part of Salem, this town gained wealth from the tanning (leather) industry until it fell on hard times
9. Pittsfield
Hehe, Pitts.
10. Winchendon
This is just funny to say hehe
11. Boxford
There’s also a Boxborough, but they’re not primarily known for storing things.
12. Manchester-by-the-Sea
That’s its actual name that was just changed in 1989 from simple Manchester.
13. Marblehead
Sometimes I think the people naming MA towns just tossed a dart at two nouns, maybe an adjective, and just went with it.
14. Reading
To most non-Massholes, this town seems to be pronounced like you’re reading a book but in fact it’s the past tense, so like “Red-ing”
15. Sharon
I want a town named after me one day. Lucky Sharon.
