"All that hard work and science classes and you want to be a nurse?"
"Nurses do the dirty work, why do you want to do that?"
"Wouldn't you rather just become a doctor, you'll make more money?"
"Why not become a doctor?"
"You love science but want to be a nurse?"
"You are smart enough to become a nurse so why don't you just become a doctor?''
As a nursing student, I am really sick and tired of people asking me these questions. Why isn't becoming a nurse good enough? Why do I have to justify my choice in career paths to so many people? I can't help but get irritated when people ask me why I am not going to be a doctor. If I wanted to become a doctor, my major would be PRE-MED. My major is NURSING, so that is what I wish to become.
I find it very ignorant when someone questions why I am becoming a nurse and not a doctor. Yes, I could have the potential to go to medical school if I wanted to. But I don't want to. I want to be a nurse. The nursing field is way more appealing to me than being a doctor is.
Nursing is for me. I don't want to be in school for the rest of my twenties. I want to be able to get married and have the flexibility to have a family. I want to be able to have the chance to further my education in the future if I choose to do so. I want to take care of patients and help them get better. I want to be a nurse.
I'm not saying doctors can't do all the things mentioned above. Those who want to become doctors have their reasonings behind it too. Sure the salary of a doctor would be nice, but I know I can live comfortably and happily with a nurse's salary. Working isn't just about the money, you have to do something you love because after all, this is what you will be doing for the rest of your life. I know I will be way happier as a nurse than if i was a doctor.
So the next time someone asks me why I am becoming a nurse and not a doctor, I shouldn't even have to give a reason. But I know they will want one, so I will simply say, "because nursing is a great field and that is what I want to do for the rest of my life."
