We've been told from the beginning that we will move mountains and change the world. This is only partly true. Yes, we have the ability to make a small change in the world, but we are only a speck of dust on this planet. We are not special and we will not all achieve our wildest dreams. You are worthy of love and respect, naturally, but you are not going to move mountains all by yourself. But who's to say that you won't help move it?
In your life, you may not get what you want. You may not keep a great job, have kids, or have a house. You may not be a millionaire or even close. You may not do anything groundbreaking. And that's okay. Normal, even. There have been billions of humans in billions of years on this planet. Billions. Not everyone did something magnificent, but everyone has the ability to make an impact on a person or on a movement.
Stop telling kids they're special. People don't need to think that. In fact, they are scarred by it. What if I'm not special? What if I fail? What if I never reach my goal? Truth is, it's normal. You move on, you make the small impacts you can. You can change a life, if you can't change the world. That life will change another. We are small and insignificant in the grand scheme, but who's to say that we are without purpose.
Purpose is something we may never figure out. We were placed on Earth for some reason. An accident? No one knows. But we have a job to take care of what we're given. To leave only a positive trace. To pay attention to this beautiful universe we have. For some reason, we were made. No one knows what that reason is or what our purpose is and we likely will never figure that out. Just live with it.
Love what you love, do what you can, and make the small changes you will. This article is not groundbreaking. Maybe nothing I do will be. Nothing is set in stone. We will fail. Just get back up when you inevitably do. Work towards your goals, but don't expect too much out of this life.
It doesn't owe you anything.
