To the Past Me

Dear 5 Year Old Me,

Life right now is great, you play outside all day and spend time with your best friends at the park. Your parents read to you and tuck you in still, you go on vacation every summer and have no stress. You get almost everything you ask for, you play with you dogs and that pesky cat that just shows up at your families house. Youth is something to cherish forever, don't forget you're always growing up.

Dear 11 Year Old Me,

You now are very involved in dance, its become your passion. You dance with the older teams and go to comeptitions. But don't let it take away from your friends and you social life. Don't let dance stress you out to the point it starts to not be fun. Enjoy your middle school years and the change of school you'll have next year. Most importantly don't forget you dance team, is like a second family to you.

Dear 13 Year Old Me,

You're officially a teenager, you can go to PG-13 movies alone with your friends and go to the mall alone. You've even started walking to dance, a lot has happened to you because you've gotten older. You help out at your studio with classes and see other little girls with the same passion you have. You started the wonderful part of life where you got an unpaid job at a museum. The money never really mattered to you though, you wanted to learn more about history and spend time with all of the friends you've made.

Dear 16 Year Old Me,

The magical number 16, do you feel any different? You've started looking at college's and what you want to major in. You still have no idea, and it scares you, but trust me when I say it will all work out. Dance is still a huge part of your life, your family is there supporting you everyday. Even if you didn't see it, they are always rooting for you to succeed past your life here at the studio. This year, you had to say goodbye to seniors who already left for college and it was so hard for you. These people grew to be like siblings to you and now you have to let them go an have a life of their own without you by their side.

Dear All Past Me's,

I don't really have advice for the future, you will continue to make mistakes and life won't always be great. But keep doing what you've been doing because my life is amazing and its all because of the choices from the past.

Youth is something that never comes back, and as much as you wanted to grow up and get rid of this thing called youth and your childhood. So you could become a young adult into an adult trust me, you have the rest of your life to grow up, so take things slow and enjoy your youth. You only get older, not younger.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
