Just because it's not happening to you doesn't mean it shouldn't bother you. With recent news about 'White Privilege', prioritizing a young boy's education over a young girl's education based on what she is wear, or the biggest debate with our mostly likely to be our next President of the United States; Donald J. Trump. A lot of uproar has been flooding our media and news feed. I know you are sitting there and rolling your eyes thinking, "Oh, no not another article about our political and social issues." I understand you are tired of hearing and seeing these, but that's the thing. It's important especially in our society that we talk about these things. As another human being that breathes, works, and fights every day to be a part of this world. It's our duty to keep fighting and be vocal about issues that will have great impact on our next generations to come.
Let's start with Donald J. Trump. There's not much appraisal I can give to this man but only that he know exactly what to say to the closed minded people who are voting for him. I mean really half of his voters are women. It's basically insulting to the rest of us on our intelligence, let alone our equal rights movement. Trump has had some very poor choice of words when it comes to talking about women. I want to refrain from repeating them as we do not need any more 'said words' out there. To me, I think it's interesting how he can say such degrading things about women when he was lots of women in his family that's including his wife and daughters. I as a woman myself I find it ridiculous that he is even being considered our next President. Someone explain to me how this is even going to 'Make America Great Again'? Because as we've seen since his announcement to run for President a lot of unimaginable things has been happening and I can only imagine how much worse it's about to get.
For example, racism has hit in all time high since what happened in Ferguson. Trump as just been fueling and adding this on to his pitch for Presidency. It gave us a clearer view into our society that maybe Racism isn't as forgotten as we once thought. Yes, it's always been an issue but knowingly being 2016 some of us thought we can move past it and grow to being a better world. Not to categorize us again and create another divide not only with race but with religion too. Another example, the Pulse Shooting, which hit home. I've never been more scared in my life. I personally knew people that would go to that club all the time or even worked there and when news broke out I sat glued to the TV and my phone hoping none of the people I knew were on the list of deceased. Thankfully, none I personally knew were on that list but my friends that knew people on that list were affected. Even two months after that event still affects us but since then Trump wanted to use the great word for 'Radical Islamic' making the whole talk about all Muslims being terrible people. Which is frustrating because the act of one doesn't mean they are all the same.
Why would we hold one race or religion accountable of one person's action if we don't do the same with our fellow Americans? Remember Dylan Roof, he is responsible for the nine lives at the Emanuel African Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Media outlets declared him as mentally unstable. Or James Holmes, in 2012 he was responsible for the lives of 12 and injured more than 70 people at a theater in Aurora, Colorado. Media outlets also declared him on mentally unstable but what did the media and government officials declare Omar Mateen when he claimed the lives of 49 and injuring 53 others. First, it was instant terrorist attack then came overflowing amounts about how he has a 'closet homosexual'. Should I really continue?
Next, Brock Turner. I realized I didn't post a picture of him because I don't feel like giving a rapist anymore spotlight that he has already been given. Can't believe they sentenced him for six months and only ended up serving three for 'good behavior'. To me, this whole thing is a slap in the face to survivors not only to women but men alike. Rape doesn't have a type such as gender, race, or religion. It can happen to anyone. This case is just another big reminder to know that if something terrible happens to you the word of mouth won't be taken seriously. They want us to speak out about these things but how can we if people like Brock Turner can get away with anything because of his rank in the social order. Stanford student couldn't be responsible of doing such a thing. Well, sorry to kill your buzz but it can and it did.
We are already teaching girls at a young age that the education of a young boy is more important than theirs. We rip them out of classes because what they are wearing is too inappropriate to their opposite-sex classmates. We humiliate them by calling them out and punishing them in front of their peers. We should be teaching everyone not only boy that females are not sexual objects. We should be empowering both sexes that their minds and education are both just as equally important. Our next generations are important and women play just as of a big role as men do. Don't divide us because of what we choose to wear, don't single us out because we are a distraction. Teach them that no distraction is greater than their education. Be smart.
I am probably missing a lot of more singular events but these are just some of the highlights that I wanted to put out there. Like whatever happened to unity. It's 2016 people we shouldn't still be dividing each other because of the color of our skins or our backgrounds, or our sexual orientation. We can't let media outlets or politicians tear us apart. What happens this very moment can change everything in our future. Would I still be alive by then? Would my children grow up to be their greatest selves? Will we continue to be at war with the same people that share a piece of this earth? Just think about it. We are all born the same way and we all will get buried the same. If we have laws they should enforced, no one isn't about the law so why let those that did the deed get the 'privilege' to walk away.
I'll leave you with this quote by Dalai Lama, "World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not the absence of violence; peace is the manifestation of human compassion."
