To My Not-So-Little Sister

Where did the time go? It seems like just yesterday we were playing secretary with mom's old typewriter and you were jipping me out of all the good office supplies. It seems like just yesterday we were writing catty things about each other in our "secret" diaries. It seems like just yesterday I could actually call you my little sister. In the blink of an eye, you've transformed into the most incredible young woman I've ever met (I know I sound like mom, but bear with me). As you get ready to apply for college and start your own life, there are some things I want you to remember.

No matter where life takes us, there is nothing that can break the bond we have. Whether we're four hours or four hundred miles from each other, we will always be inseparable. You will always be my little sister and there's no one in the world that can ever come close to replacing you. You're my best friend, my go-to, my therapist, my style icon and the only person I can make fun of the rest of our family with. You are irreplaceable. Distance is nothing for us. I've been by your side since the day you were born and nothing will change that.

You're about to embark on a whole new part of your life and it's okay to be nervous. Going off to college (and beyond) is supposed to be a little scary. It's something you've never done before, but I promise that you will adjust quicker than you think. Don't let the nerves overshadow the excitement. This goes for everything you try in life.

Remember who you are and where you came from. Remember who has been there for you and who has helped shape you. Always stay grounded no matter where you are in life. Our family, our hometown, our friends - they will always be a part of you even if you feel distant from it all.

Most importantly, don't underestimate yourself. It kills me to hear you sell yourself short because honestly you are one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) people I know. I'm not just saying that because you're my little sister and I'll think you're incredible no matter what you do. I truly believe that you have so much more potential than you even know or give yourself credit for. You're incredibly intelligent, charismatic, funny, beautiful (inside and out), hardworking - the list is endless. There is no doubt in my mind that everything you do will end in success.

So when life gets rough or overwhelming, remember these little things because I truly mean them. You have been changing my life since the day you were born. You're my support system, my best friend, my source of comedic relief and the most important person in my life. I have no doubt that you can change the world like you've changed mine.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
