I Am Not Just A List On My Resume

A Renaissance Man No More

Career Tips

Renaissance man: “a cultured man who was knowledgeable, educated, or proficient in a wide range of fields.”

I’ve been going over my resume lately and finding that there are far too many things that I try to include, yet none that I’m willing to cut out. Yes, in fact, I did receive my babysitter’s certification in 2008—hire me, I’m responsible and caring. I did make National Italian Honors Society in 2013—hire me, I’m cultured and intelligent. I did work as a barista, as a waitress, as a secretary, and now as a research assistant—hire me, I can do it all.

Through all of this self-promotion, I’ve come to realize that maybe I’m not actually a Renaissance man and am instead a “Master of None” (Thanks, Aziz Ansari). Each of these experiences has been fleeting and an effort to build up my resume for employers to be wowed by, but can I really call myself an expert in any of these fields? Probably not. Can I call myself passionate and devoted to any of these fields? Definitely not.

You can argue in my defense and say that everyone has to start somewhere (true), or that at my age and education level I can’t really be expected to have extreme experience in any field, or know what I’m passionate about yet (also true). However, do I need to keep all of these titles cluttering up my resume, in hopes of the off chance that one of my 3 month job stints strikes the fancy of a future employer? Absolutely not.

Like many of us, I got caught up in the ‘bigger is better’ mentality. But whatever happened to ‘less is more’? Going along with one of my previous articles, I’m going to spend my time from here on out trying to divert from the Renaissance man, overachieving motif. Instead I want to focus on my passions and build a resume that shows not just what I can do, but what I enjoy doing.

Sure it’s impressive to look at yourself on paper and see the pages of experiences past, but I’d rather start painting a picture of myself instead of handing in a lengthy list.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
