Why I'm Not Boycotting Target
Target

Due to the debate over equality laws in several states, Target has changed their bathroom and fitting room policies. As everyone has already heard, this new policy will allow anyone to use any bathroom or fitting room they wish. After the news broke, hundreds of thousands of people vowed to boycott the establishment, while others remained faithful to Target and celebrated the new policies. Is boycotting Target a good idea? Or should everyone be supportive of the new policy? Here’s my stance - I am not boycotting Target.

First things first—I don’t agree with the new policy that Target has instilled in every store. I don’t think that the policy is efficient in the way that would benefit majority of the public. This policy leaves so much room for error and a negative experience for customers. Personally, I think that there are several other solutions to the policy that would be more effective and more agreed upon by the general public. But it’s not my store. I don’t get a say in new policies or what gets restocked. And that’s okay.

Many groups of people have specifically vowed to boycott Target. So why haven’t I? As a human being, not just as a Christian, I think it’s stupid. No, I don’t agree with Target’s stance. But I don’t agree with President Obama’s stance on several issues. Does that mean I’m going to boycott the United States? No. Why? Because that would be stupid. Just because an individual or a company has different views than I do does not mean that I am going to treat them any differently than if they shared my views.

As a Christian it wouldn’t necessarily be right for me to boycott Target, either. Christians are supposed to come together and show every kind of person love. No. Matter. What. That does not mean that I have to agree with what everyone says. But what that does mean is that I won’t show hate or malice towards a company or person. Different people have different beliefs. I have to respect that. I don’t have to agree with those beliefs, but I do have to respect the individuals with whom I disagree.

I won’t be using the bathrooms in Target because it does make me uncomfortable. But there are bathrooms everywhere. Is it really that big of deal to go somewhere else? Plus, I still love the store. Why should a policy concerning one company influence my entire life? It shouldn’t. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I don’t think the policy is a good idea. But I cannot change that policy. I can’t change a lot of things. And that’s okay. But I won’t boycott Target.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
