4 Ways You Can Avoid Being Basic But Still Enjoy The Fall

Enough with the pumpkin spice already.

It’s officially fall! It’s that season that everyone claims to love, and when girls are at their most “basic” (apparently). While I am a big fan of autumn and being cozy, I am one of those people who tries not to be “basic.”

Do I love sweater weather and the occasional trip to the apple orchard? Of course, I do.

However, I will also be the first one to admit that I don’t get the hype over pumpkin spice (at this point, I just am horrified by how many foods are getting fused with the autumnal flavor) and the second you start planning a full day of harvest festival-esque events is the moment that I tap out.

I’m all for enjoying fall days—however, after seeing the same old activities make seasonal lists, I just want to celebrate the new season in a low-key way…maybe one that doesn’t involve apple-picking, pumpkin spice lattes, and haunted houses.

Whether you’re basic or not, here are a few different ways to shake up your perfect fall day.

1. Instead of making pumpkin spice lattes (or trekking to Starbucks for the seasonal classic), bake some fall-ish treats (like cinnamon rolls or apple crisp)!

I know, it’s basically blasphemous to not have a pumpkin spice latte in honor of fall. However, considering how out of hand the pumpkin spice craze has gotten (I’m looking at you, whoever decided pumpkin spice hot dogs should be a thing), taking a little break from the pumpkin spice is needed. Plus, nothing says cozy like baking yummy treats. If you need your Starbucks fix, I personally suggest the Caramel Apple Spice drink for your fall fix!

2. Go for a walk instead of heading to a corn maze.

For one thing, there is a zero percent chance of getting lost and resigning yourself to hours of wandering around a quirky pattern cut into, well, a cornfield. (Also a zero percent chance of? Having people jump out at you from the corn because you forgot to head to a maze that isn’t of the “haunted” variety. True story.)

Plus, not all of us has the “luxury” of living in an area that offers that form of fall entertainment…but almost all of us live in an area where we can take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the changing leaves. It’s lowkey, you can do it alone or with friends, and no one becomes a victim to the “Children of the Corn.” I consider that a win.

3. Skip the apple orchard and grab cider from the grocery store and head home to your favorite fall-scented candle and whatever Pinterest craft you need to finish.

I know, I know: it’s almost an obligation to go pick apples as soon as September hits. However, it’s also practically an obligation to pick all those apples and then either a) forget that you have apples and they go back or b) you have apples with everything for the weeks following and you just resent apples for the entire year after.

Just cut out the middleman and head to the grocery store for your cider and donut needs. Most groceries will have local orchards’ ciders for sale, and any donut is a good donut. If you need the scent of apples (or anything fall) in your life, grab a candle on your way to check out: I personally love anything that smells of cinnamon and the woods to get me feeling autumnal.

4. Avoid the haunted houses and get your scares for cheap (from the safety of your couch!

I personally think that haunted houses are an unnecessary fall evil, even though I am a total horror buff. (Essentially my line of thinking is: being scared but being safe is great. Paying for a near-death experience and panic attack? Not so much.) With October in view though, there’s almost an obligation to get scary with it, and so, let me suggest some alternatives that don’t cost you any money and allow you to remain curled up and safe.

First of all, podcasts are your friend. There are a million and one creepy podcasts that cover paranormal subjects or true crime. (My Favorite Murder, anyone?) Plus, you can multitask while you listen, making it perfect for those baking or DIY days!

Not a giant fan of being scared but you’d rather watch than listen? No problem! Head over to YouTube for series like Buzzfeed Unsolved, which covers supernatural/true crime with a lot of laughs and plenty of research. (Want something spookier? Ghost Adventuresis always an interesting bet too!)

Whether you’re a basic girl or just appreciate the fall season like everyone else, there is no shortage of things you can do to shake up your fall traditions in a lowkey way!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
