Many of us these days sometimes feel alone, lost, or confused and we are waiting around for someone to save us. We are waiting for someone to give us all the answers to the questions we so desperately want answered. We want someone to make us feel like we belong here, someone that boosts our confidence, or someone who makes us ‘feel better.’ It would be great if someday someone saved us from all of our troubles, but that’s not how life works out.
People can keep us going by providing love and support, but in the end it is up to us to save ourselves. Happiness comes from inside of us and we can’t count on someone else to make it happen. When I first heard about being your own hero, I thought it sounded selfish and self-centered, but as I began to think about it, I did realize that we all need to be our own heroes. We can’t wait around for someone or something that may never happen. Being our own hero means believing in ourselves and being brave. It means taking chances and being proud of who we are.
We search for people to give us something that we can’t give ourselves, like some sort of security or a safety net. Usually, we never deal with our own problems once they happen. We tend to help others before we help ourselves and, of course, there is nothing wrong with that, but we never put ourselves first. We bury our problems and our emotions deep inside of us until someone pulls them out. We expect that person to have all the answers and to make us feel better, but we need to learn how to trust our judgment and to believe in our own instincts.
No one is going to be there 24/7 to help us and to lift us up out of the darkness. It’s terrifying to even think about, but we are able to rescue ourselves, and if we fall, it’s nobody’s fault but our own. Waiting around for someone to save us is tiring and time consuming. It’s time to take charge of our own lives and not let someone else do it. All it takes is determination. The person who stares back at us in the mirror every morning will always be the one with the power over our life. Of course being our own hero isn’t easy. I never said it was, but it’s definitely worth it in the long run.
There is no one who is going to hold our hand through life and pick us up when we fall. There will always be people who we can go to for advice and people we can vent to, but in the end it is our own decision, as it is our job to change what is going on. We’re not going to wake up one day and be able to automatically save ourselves, but we can start taking action and just take one day at a time. It may be a slow process becoming our own hero, but it doesn’t matter. We can take on the role of being a hero and basically just fake it until we make it. No one is coming to save us; we need to be the hero of our life and save our own self by taking action.
