Going away to college made me realize that the area of Minnesota I come from is sort of a strange place. We have a certain culture, language, accent, etc. Here are some of the things that you will only understand if you are from northern Minnesota.

1. We have an accent

It is not quite a Canadian draw, but close to it. Many southern Minnesotans can even distinguish this accent from their own.

2. It's SOW-na

This is actually something I got into an argument with my friends over. Northern Minnesota was dominated by Finnish immigrants back in the day, and they are the reason why we call it sow-na and not saw-na. When I first said sauna in front of my friends, they had looked at me like I had said some foreign word, when I grew up saying it like that and everyone around me also said it the same way!

3. Lake life

We live in such a lake-filled area, that going to the lake for a vacation is a common thing. Everyone either lives on the lake, has a cabin, or at least a boat they can take out.

4. Deer hunting season

You'd swear this was a calendar holiday. It technically is for us! A lot of families would go out to the woods for the weekend hoping to get that big buck. Back in high school, many people wouldn't even come to the Friday before opener day because they were out getting ready for the weekend.

5. We take the Fourth of July seriously

This has to be one of the biggest holidays in northern Minnesota. Probably because the fourth falls right around the warmest time of the year here.

6. Oh and the drinking

Small towns are just known for the drinking, but there is a place in northern Minnesota called the "Iron Range." This is a place quoted to "have a bar on literally every corner." Maybe its because we don't have much to do, but maybe we just like our beer.

7. Hockey, hockey, hockey

Hockey is taken very seriously in Minnesota, especially the north. I am assuming it's because we have snow six months out of the year, making outdoor hockey season a long one.

8. We are immune to the cold

When I moved to Grand Forks in North Dakota, I got told a lot that the weather there would be a lot worse than where I came from. Honestly, there was no difference. The winter I experienced there was almost the exact same as it would have been at home!

9. We enjoy the Great Outdoors

We have forests and lakes in our backyards. I don't know many people from northern MN who hate the outdoors.

10. We love our state.

A fairly large state in the northern Midwest that not many have been to or even heard about much. But we show pride in our state and love it with every ounce of our hearts.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
