Society Makes Us a Barcode, Are You Going to Wear it?

I have written this as an open letter to address a problem in today’s society. Society as a whole has painted an image within itself, that we all have to be the same and we can’t have our own unique, individual characteristics. I have seen people around me doubt themselves because of what the media says or what their parents say. They fall into a trap thinking they have to be the same as the person sitting next to them or they won’t blend in. Blending in is just what society wants. Society often associates people with the inscription of currency. All coins look the same, the slightest change in color or shape, they are thrown into the pot to be melted down and reshaped to fit the mint they have been created for. However, when certain coins are no longer in circulation, they more often become collectables, and more valuable than the average coin. Being different has its own values in itself, and is more rewarding than being the typical mint and print that we expect from one another. It breaks my heart to see people fall into this dangerous trap because they lose who they are as an individual. It is almost as if they are blinded and mesmerized by what society says. Normalcy is a trap and a problem that we all need to address. Instead of criticizing the person who stands out we should try to strive to embrace our own personality that is within ourselves. We shouldn’t let fear of other’s judgment cage who we truly are within ourselves. I hope that after reading this short open letter you strive to become an individual that swims against the current of people telling you what to do. Don’t let society to confine your unique qualities inside yourself. Don’t let society mutilate and suppress you were born to be. With much love to you all, sincerely -AuzziRay

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
