In today's society, we tend to believe that we are defined by the number of followers, likes, shares, and retweets that we have. It's so easy to get caught up with wanting to have the best posts on Instagram, all set with the most perfect aesthetic. Our social media platforms have turned into less of what we want to share, and more of what we think others want to see.
Some people are able to post a tweet, photo, snapchat story, or status and go about their day, carefree of the numbers of likes, shares, and retweets that they get. Unfortunately, not all of us have the same confidence. Many social media users care very deeply about what their platforms look like, how many followers they have, and how many people have seen what they've shared. To say that I'm not one of those people would be false, but I wish that I wasn't. There is so much more to life than how popular a person is on social media. There's just so much more to life than social media in general. Don't get me wrong, wanting to share different aspects of life is totally fine, and it's really fun to see what your friends are doing. The trick is being able to share those details without caring about what others think.
As much as we claim that social media helps us capture the moment, it's very easy to get lost in the moment because our focus is in the wrong place. Taking a picture over and over again just to make sure it looks candid, definitely makes it the opposite of a candid. Waiting to post a status or tweet when there's a high amount of user traffic takes so much extra work. Enjoy your life and the time spent with people right in that very moment! Not every occasion has to be physically grasped or shared in order to remember it. Sometimes it's nice to just have your own private memory to look back on and share with the people that were there with you.
There are things we do in life that are worth sharing, but we do not need people's approval for what we post! It's also perfectly fine to do something without posting it for everyone to see. We need to stop living our lives for others and sharing moments just for the likes. Memories should not be valued based on the quantity of likes and shares, but the quality of the time that was spent.
