There are two types of people in this world: the Valentine’s haters and the Valentine’s lovers. If you fall into the latter, then chances are you probably have a significant other to share the day with, and buy you lots of chocolate and flowers. Or maybe you’re single and just really love the idea of love. But let’s face the facts; if you’re single, chances are you fall into the first group. The group of haters. The group completely opposed to the idea of celebrating a holiday solely centered around relationships.
In today’s society, there is a lot of emphasis on finding your significant other. Yes, being in a relationship is great. It is exciting, and filled with opportunities — and Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate this love. But there is something to be said for being single, for taking the time to find yourself and figure out what you are really looking for in a relationship. For having the confidence not to settle with just anyone. There is something to be said for enjoying Valentine’s Day, even if you don’t have an S.O. to share it with.
So for all of the Valentine’s Haters out there, look to change your perspective. While there is nothing wrong with having a date for this lovely holiday, certain things can make being single just as fun.
For starters, you don’t have to wait two hours just to sit down at a crowded restaurant.
Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest restaurant days of the year. Why waste the majority of your night waiting for overpriced food when you can order Chinese take-out and binge watch Netflix all from the comfort of your own couch? And with no one there to impress, you’re free to pig out as much as you want.
You don’t have to share your dessert (okay, wine) with anyone.
And not just your usual box of Franzia. Treat yo ‘self with something nicer for this special occasion. A few glasses in and the thoughts of being single will slowly drift away.
You don’t have to shave your legs.
Because, ew.
On the 15th, all of the candy goes on sale.
Cheap, heart-shaped chocolate, what more could you want? Again, with no one to impress feel free to binge.
You can go see "50 Shades of Grey."
Not too many guys would be down to see this on V-day, so embrace your inner goddess and make it a singles outing. Maybe next year you’ll have your own Christian Grey to celebrate with. If not, at least you had the pleasure of watching Jamie Dornan on screen for two hours.
You don’t have to buy anyone a gift.
Finding the perfect Valentine’s Day gift can be stressful. Too serious, too fast? Or not serious enough? Luckily this is an intricate balance you will not have to deal with.
There is no room for disappointment.
There is a lot of hype built up around Valentine’s Day, and like New Year’s Eve, we are often let down with the actual results. With no expectations, the only direction your night can go is up.
If you’re single, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a depressing holiday. Having friends that love you is just as important as being in a romantic relationship. This year, focus on spending time on these relationships, not on hating the holiday as a whole. Embrace this attitude with confidence because being single on Valentine’s Day? That’s totally okay.
