Nnajiugo Nwosu Explains How He Became an Entrepreneur

"Being an entrepreneur was what I always wanted, but how to achieve that goal was never really scripted."

Those are the words of Nnajiugo Nwosu, the Senior VP of Chamo Projects and an entrepreneur in the healthcare space with a whole host of experiences in the field of finance, commodities trading, tech startups, and more.

When Nnajiugo first graduated, he started working with Boeing, one of the largest aerospace companies. He recalls working as an Information Technology Specialist.

Shortly after working with Boeing in the defense contract industry, Nwosu worked for the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC). Nwosu says working with HASC was a great experience for him because he did much more than just work with hospitals – he had the opportunity to work with politicians on issues that had to do with the healthcare system in the state of California.

"I was one of the individuals who worked on the reports that were eventually released on the state of healthcare in Southern California in 2009."

These are just a few experiences that Nnajiugo was part of on his path to becoming an entrepreneur. He credits his experience in various industries for helping fuel his drive as an entrepreneur.

"When I left my regular employment for the entrepreneurship journey, I never really imagined how cruel it could be," says Nwosu.

Nnajiugo Nwosu says he first started dabbling in the world of commodities trading, specifically in crude oil and natural gas. He says he would pursue deal after deal, and none would ever come to fruition. Despite these setbacks, Nwosu was not ready to give up.

After half a decade, Nnajiugo Nwosu decided to make a change in his career and begin working within the tech industry. That was the start of what would be a great entrepreneurial journey.

Nwosu says that while the career change certainly wasn't easy, he was well-prepared to take on the challenge.

"My Bachelor's degree was in computer science already and my previous work experience was in the technology space," says Nwosu.

Nwosu says by the time he entered the tech industry, it had already changed dramatically, so he would have to learn on the go to meet the demands of his new work. This ability to learn quickly and adapt within the tech industry would later prove to be helpful to Nwosu when he would choose to pursue the path of entrepreneurship by himself.

"I was able to leverage my fundamental understanding of technology as a whole to catch up with new trends in the industry, namely cloud engineering," says Nwosu.

Nwosu became an Amazon Cloud Solutions Architect with a specialization in Cloud security.

Because of his ability to adapt and learn new skills quickly, Nwosu quickly gained recognition with several tech startups in California's Silicon Beach area. These new connections would prove to be vitally important to Nwosu and would later help him propel his career to new heights.

"Within this experience, I can say that I truly developed the true fundamentals of entrepreneurship. There was a priceless value in having the right set of like-minded individuals around me."

After working with tech startups, Nwosu decided to pursue his own entrepreneurial vision and put his skills to the test.

There is a famous saying that goes: 'your net worth is your network', and this has proven true for Nwosu.

If Nnajiugo Nwosu were to give advice to his younger self when he first started his journey as an entrepreneur or any other budding entrepreneur in the early stages, he says that he would mention that it's a priority to audit the people around you and ensure they are aligned with your goals and where you want to be. "This is paramount."

Nwosu says it's important for young entrepreneurs to understand that it's normal to grow out of old relationships. "Just because you start the journey of life with a certain group of people, does not mean you have to follow each other all your lives. This is a point that has been reinforced by my motivators/mentors – Steve Harvey and Joel Osteen."

Another piece of advice Nwosu would give his younger self is: "Your success is not predicated on somebody else's success."

Nwosu ends off by paraphrasing the words of his motivator/mentor, Steve Harvey: "getting into business is like bungee jumping or skydiving but without the practice."

"In entrepreneurship, you are jumping off the cliff of business and you don't know what tomorrow holds."

"As an entrepreneur, one of the most important determinations to make is who you will surround yourself with. By going through the journey of entrepreneurship and learning about yourself during the process, you learn who your network is."

"By the time you are done falling off the apex of the cliff, you also learn about the person you have become."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
