Nine Things You Learn To Let Go Of In College

As students, we approach new experiences all the time while reality is hitting us right in the face. As days pass by we unintentionally get used to transitioning into the real world. College comes with changes -- good and bad. It is okay for us to let some of those toxic memories and people from the past go, but unfortunately, some of the good ones can drift away too. Here are nine things you learn to let go of while dealing with your college experience.

1. High school friendships.

You will realize that the only reason you were friends with half of those people was because you were forced to see them 5 days a week. That girl you sat next to in second-period english who you shared your gossip with from the previous weekend might not be around to hear those juicy details a year later.

2. Baggage from past relationships.

This one is for the better, trust me.

3. Chivalry.

Many believe that chivalry is dead, which is not entirely true. It just happens that in college most men tend to not be chivalrous and make girls believe that term is in full effect. In our generation it just seems to be easier for a man to text a girl after a party at 1 a.m. to hang out rather than surprising her at her door with flowers and a Dunkin' Donuts coffee in his hand.

4. Seeing your family members and friends as often.

It can be frustrating living away at college. Students are so busy stressing between classes, studying, part-time jobs, and socializing that it makes us forget to spend time or even just call someone that we have not seen or spoke to in awhile. You learn to accept that even the ones you love have their own lives and it is not as easy as it used to be to make time for everyone, but that does not mean we love or miss them any less.

5. Being babied in the classroom.

College classes make you appreciate that annoying 12th-grade teacher that treated you like you were still in grammar school. None of the work you do will be planned out or as simple as it was in high school.

6. Money.

Whether you make the money yourself or receive it from someone, it will be spent. Everyone gets sick of that cafeteria food once in awhile, so you will order out too many times. Then comes the school books, late night Uber rides, shopping, whatever it may be, you will learn how quickly your money can go.

7. Unnecessary drama.

No matter what you do, people are going to talk. Typically people will react to this and stir up more drama, but with age you realize that it is not worth the fight.

8. Expectations.

College is not always how it appears in movies or T.V. shows, portraying it as a free for all.You have your own responsibilities and have to manage yourself. Of course it is okay to go out when you have an 8:30 a.m. class the next day from time to time, but this is really the beginning of adulthood and you cannot expect to be playing hard without working hard.

9. Social statuses.

College gives everyone a fresh new start. Meeting new people everywhere is something you definitely will get used to, but the thing you are letting go of is defining a person by what social clique they are in.

Even though we learn to let go of these aspects (happy, sad, good, or bad) they leave for a reason and for the better within time!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
