It seems like every day we wake up to more and more horribly tragic news being reported from within our state, our country or around the world. Whenever I check up on the current events happening in the news, there is always negative headlines overpowering the few positive and neutral ones. Seeing such a constant stream of disheartening stories. There have been many times that I considered just not reading and watching the news anymore, because it was all just so discouraging and seemed to put a damper on my day.
However, I realized that turning a blind eye to the news and current important events that occur within our community is both ignorant and rude.
It is our responsibility to be aware of what is going on in the world around us, both the good things and the bad. Ignoring major issues does not make them go away. Refusing to acknowledge problems in the community that affect other people does not mean that the problems will stop happening. If we are unaware about the issues and injustices going on around the world, we will never be able to combat them.
Even seemingly irrelevant news can affect our lives. Things that happen across borders can impact many others. The news can affect our daily lives, how we act, how we work, how we learn, and how we interact with others. Keeping up with the news is one of the easiest ways to educate yourself, because it shares knowledge that is currently relevant.
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech, and the freedom of the press. This, in turn, guarantees that we should all be able to hear and spread news. We should all take advantage of this right that we were given. Our Founding Fathers granted us this right because they believed that citizens should be well-informed and able to speak freely on issues that we face.
In order to do this we must stay up-to-date on what the important issue actually are, so we can work, change, and hold people responsible for their actions. There will always be news to report, but the public has to pay attention and make itself get involved to get it. If we do so, we will create a more educated, socially aware, and intelligent future for ourselves, our country, and the world. We have to remember that not everybody around the globe has access to resources that can bring them the news as easily as we do, so it is our responsibility to use our assets and use them for positive change. It is so important to stay aware of what is going on in your community, and to stay up-to-date on the news.
