Facebook, to most, is known as the social media site where friends overshare their thoughts and relatives comment embarrassing things on pictures. If you can navigate through all of the angst-filled political "discussions" and Farmville requests, then you'll notice that Facebook has a nifty little "trending" section that notifies users about what other "Facebookers" are talking about. While they're not always the most exciting topics, they always tend to be pretty newsworthy, so here is what's happening in the world according to Facebook.
1. The GRAMMYs
The 58th GRAMMYs were held on Monday, Feb. 15. This topic flooded social media feeds, making it impossible to miss what happened. Some highlights included Lady Gaga's powerful tribute to the late David Bowie, Adele owning the GRAMMY stage with "All I Ask," and Taylor Swift winning Album of the Year before throwing shade at Kanye West.
2. Vanessa Bayer
"Saturday Night Live's" Vanessa Bayer graced the Weekend Update skit on Feb. 13 as none other than Rachel Green from "Friends." If you haven't watched it yet, you need to. Bayer doesn't disappoint.
3. Sports Illustrated
Sports Illustrated made history this week by revealing the three covers of its annual Swimsuit Edition. The magazine is receiving praise for featuring a different body type on each of its three covers. Ashley Graham, shown above, is the magazine's first size-16 cover girl.
4. Kanye West
To be honest, when isn't Kanye West in the news? This week, he graced Twitter with his latest rant. In a surprising (or not so surprising, depending on who you ask) turn of events, the rapper publicly asked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to invest in his ideas. West then proceeded to explain the $53 million personal debt crisis that he is in. It looks like Kanye needs to start taking notes from the Kardashian Empire.
5. Antonin Scalia
Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died on Feb. 13 at the age of 79. Scalia's death has caused a stir in the political arena by creating a vacancy on the Supreme Court. President Obama has the chance to fill the vacancy before leaving office, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is leading efforts in Congress to keep Obama's candidate from being appointed. No matter where your political loyalties lie, it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the next few months.
6. "Star Wars: Episode VIII"
Star Wars fans around the world rejoiced as Disney announced on Feb. 15 that filming for "Episode VIII" has begun. As if that wasn't exciting enough, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran were added to the cast of the space epic. Can December 2017 get here already?
7. "Game of Thrones"
HBO's hit TV show "Game of Thrones" released its new trailer for season six this week and the Internet couldn't stop talking about it. Following the typical "Game of Thrones" fashion, the new season is not looking to be any happier. I'm not a betting man, but I'm guessing that more main characters will be killed off.
8. Ted Cruz
Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz discovered that he's up against more than the GOP nomination and Hilary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. He's also up against Donald Trump. Cruz is fighting accusations about his citizenship and eligibility to run for president. Trump has gone as far as saying that he's planning on suing Cruz (yes, you read correctly). Why is that, you might ask? It's because Cruz wasn't born in America and he is, therefore, not eligible for the presidency.
9. Laron Syndrome
A small village in Ecuador might hold the key to unlocking a cure for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer's. Based on about 30 years of research, scientists have discovered that the villagers who have Laron Syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting growth, seem to be protected from the various diseases listed above.
10. Dayton Flyers
The Dayton Flyers Men's Basketball team is now the number 13 team in America, giving the program its highest national rank in 49 years.
11. George W. Bush
Like a good older brother, former president George W. Bush returned to the campaign trail for the first time in seven years to rally behind his brother and GOP contender Jeb Bush. The 43rd President made his appearance in South Carolina to revive Jeb's campaign.
