New Year's Eve With Family- The Way To Go

New Year’s Eve with your family sounds lame? I beg to differ. Well, I didn’t always feel that way. In high school, when my mom insisted that we spend New Year’s as a family, I would usually respond something along the lines of, “But I won’t have any fun!” Little did I know, my mom knew exactly how to make sure that my New Year’s plans not only didn’t fall through, but also were a genuine fun time. New Year’s spent with my family would surprisingly be the best nights of the year. Here’s why!

1. At the end of the day, family is so important.

New Year's Eve is supposed to be spent with people who you want to be a big part of the upcoming year. Family is exactly that. They are seriously the ones who love you the most, so why not dedicate one night to celebrate that?

2. It's stress free!

We’ve all been there. It’s 10 o’clock New Year’s Eve and you still are unsure of what your plan is. He was going to have a party, but now she is, and now her sister’s brother’s cousin is having it. You are probably texting ten people trying to get the address while also picking out your outfit and of course figuring how your ride situation. With your family, you know exactly where you are going and what time.

3. You are guaranteed good pictures.

Who needs blurry pictures in someone’s basement when mom has the oversized and once a year used Nikon camera. You are guaranteed good pictures, especially since you can usually convince family members to take the same picture 1000 times.

4. Plans do not fall through.

If you are even five minutes late to the New Year’s plans, someone in the family group chat is most definitely going to bombard you with “where are you” texts accompanied by angry emojis. It’s not like you have the option to cancel last minute because the family is not complete without you there. Also, if your family is anything like mine, your mom has booked these plans months and years in advance and has a countdown until the night arrives.

Although we all hope for the most exciting, crazy, and over the top New Year's, celebrating with family is actually the way to go. As a child, I thought staying up until midnight with my sister was the most thrilling night of the year. Why does that have to change?

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
