I absolutely love dorm life, but it’s got one tragic downside: there’s no kitchen. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to bake someone cookies to thank them for something or bring treats to a study group or just make a meal with friends. So now that I’m home with a full kitchen to enjoy, here are 5 odd treats from my family.
1. Grilled PB&J
I tried this out after a friend suggested it in high school and now it’s all my little siblings eat. It’s literally grilled cheese but with peanut butter and jelly instead of cheese.
2. Stovetop Strudel
Just like the one above, this is a variation on grilled cheese. Instead of a cheese slice, use pie filling and some cream cheese. Once you’ve got it on the plate, drizzle some icing while it’s still warm.
3. Gumdrop Cookies
Exactly how it sounds. Make some cookie dough (thicker dough with oatmeal in it is better) and add gumdrops instead of chocolate chips.
4. Breakfast Pizza
This is a classic to people in certain areas of the country and a disgrace to people in other areas, but everyone should try it. Basically, instead of sauce, just slice up some cheese. Then sprinkle the regular mozzarella. Finally, for toppings, add scrambled eggs along with your choice of bacon, sausage, potatoes, or any other breakfast staples. I promise it’s way better than it sounds.
5. Personalized Crescent Rolls
Buy a tube of crescent rolls. Before you roll up each roll, cover it on one side with your favorite small candies, like M&Ms or chocolate chips. Be careful to keep the candy in the middle so that it doesn’t spill out once you roll it up. When you’ve baked the rolls, you’ll have delicious melted candy inside. Confession: This sounds like a dessert, but I only ever eat it for breakfast.
Merry cooking and happy new year!
