5 Things I Never Experienced Before Nashville

Things just aren't the same down south as they are back home in California.

1. Y’all

How do you even spell that? On the west coast, we don’t say y’all. We say “you guys” instead, even if our listening audience is solely made up of girls. I’ve heard y’all being said in the movies and on TV, but rarely in person back home.

2. Left Turn Yield

That’s not a common thing in my corner of the world. The vast majority of the time, there is a left lane with its own light. The left lane cannot turn unless they specifically have a green arrow. The only exception is when there is a clear “Left Turn Yield On Green” sign, which are few and far between.

3. Meat & Three

I had never heard of this before until someone was recommending a restaurant in Nashville and referred to it as a “meat and three.” I was so taken aback by the foreign phrase “meat and three” that I completely forgot the name of the restaurant. Apparently, this style of restaurant has a selection of meats and a selection of sides. You guessed it - you get one of the former and three of the latter. I have never heard of these anywhere else.

4. Hot and Humid

The other day someone said to me, “Hey it cooled down a lot today!” This was true, it had cooled down significantly since the day prior. Yet we were still in the mid-80s! And it was humid like no one’s business. I’m familiar with the concept of hot weather; I’m from San Diego County, out in the mountains where we get hot, dusty summers (and snow in the wintertime). But being so far away from the coast, it is very dry. I’m not used to this smothering humid heat. It’s downright awful.

5. Parking is a rare and beautiful treasure to find.

This is especially awful at my college, but is true for the whole city. There are so many cars here! It’s so hard to find parking at all, let alone near where you want to go! And you can forget about making a left turn into oncoming traffic. It’s impossible.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
