New Semester Resolutions

A collection of things I'll follow through with and those that I won't

Going back to school after a long weekend in high school was tough. Going back after a two week Christmas break was even harder. But, going back to college after a five-week-long hiatus is seriously rough. While some college students were productive members of society over break - managing internships or random jobs to earn some money - many of us were not. Many of us took this break as an excuse to do absolutely nothing. We slept late almost every day, saw friends we missed at school and generally were very useless blobs that our parents liked to nag and our younger siblings envied. Nevertheless, spring semester is here, and here are some ways I'm telling myself I will be better this time around.

1. I will not skip class

Even if I really want to. It creates unnecessary stress and it's really not that difficult people!

2. I will pay attention when I go to class

This is the harder part. Getting there is one thing, but absorbing information takes effort that I'm not always ready to put in. This semester I will limit the amount of time I spend on my phone in class because it's seriously gotten to a new level of bad.

3. I will maybe go to office hours at least once

Honestly, I probably won't but I know I should so I will absolutely consider it.

4. I will write my papers before the day before they are due

THIS. Knowing that I can bang out a decent paper in one night is not good. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should, and I definitely SHOULDN'T.

5. I will study before the day before a test

Now I may be able to put together an adequate paper in a night, but I definitely could benefit from more than one night's worth of studying.

6. I will use my gym membership

I maybe went to the gym twice last semester. TWICE. I will be better.

7. I will eat (mostly) healthy

Fruits and veggies and limited NOWL

8. I will not go out on a Tuesday night unless absolutely necessary

Because sometimes it is, but certainly not always.

9. I will let myself go out Thursdays because those are always necessary

TRUTH.

10. I will talk to more boys

Putting yourself out there is good, there are some gems out there if you know where to look.

11. But, I will not let myself feel bad about boys

Because at the end of the day, you are so much more than good enough!!

12. I will try harder

I know that last semester I didn't give it my all, and truthfully I was selling myself short. I will put in work even if I would rather not because I owe that to myself.

13. But, I will not compare myself to others

I may not have an internship or be taking 18 credits, but I'm doing my best and I'm CRUSHING IT (hopefully!)

Spring semester is a chance to start anew. A chance to redeem yourself if you didn't have the best fall semester and a chance to continue killing it if you did. As of now, I plan on taking full advantage of this opportunity by sticking to at least a majority of these resolutions!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
