I'm sure we all remember Brock Turner, the swimming athlete from Stanford university that had stellar grades, multiple athletic records, and, oh yes, received only 3-months jail time for sexually assaulting an unconscious girl.
Turner's sentence broke the internet when people discovered he was only receiving a fraction of a year in jail, as opposed to multiple years. Many people believed it to be a privilege issue, others, a faulty justice system, or even both. Initially, the sentence was going for 6 months, some argued for 6 years. In any case, Turner was given his short sentence, and on Friday, August 2, 2016, he was released back into the world after serving his time.
Sheriff Laurie Smith though Turner's sentence to be far too soft: "He should be in prison right now, but he's not in our custody," she stated.
While the sentence may not have been just, Turner's life has been forever changed. Every 90 days, for the rest of his life, Turner is required to register as a Tier III sex offender. This will alert everyone in his neighborhood, and eventually, every where he goes, that a disturbing man is walking the ground around them.
In addition to his registration, he has been banned from swimming and expelled from school. And while people will still speak of how 3 months in jail was not enough, this man's public social torture will essentially be a life sentence.
How's that for justice?
