A New Perception on Makeup

Deciding to not think of makeup of as fake.

A New Perception on Makeup

Makeup is hot right now. Between eyebrows that are on fleek or eyeliner wings that could cut someone, makeup is a popular topic on social media. In a world full of beauty standards and the idolization of perfection, makeup is a confusing thing. On one hand, most girls think they must have makeup on before leaving the house and strive for it to be perfect. However, on the other hand, makeup has a bad rap for being fake. Makeup doesn't have to be anti-feminist, it doesn't make you fake and, most importantly, it can be a great creative outlet. There are so many great reasons to wear makeup:

1. If it makes you feel good, DO IT.

If you want to wear makeup because it makes you happy, you do you. If you want to wear little to no makeup, go for it. If you want to take hours in front of the mirror to feel your best, I commend your determination and dedication and your apparent skills.

2. It accentuates features of your face.

Makeup is a great way to really highlight the very best features of your face. If you have great eyes that you want to showcase, eyeliner and eye shadow are there to help. It can also help you to become more confident with other areas that you may not be as excited about. Don't take that as advice to hide yourself.

3. It can be a form of creative expression.

Makeup allows you to express yourself in a creative way. There are so many different kinds of brushes and products that can stimulate your imagination and paint your face. If you are good at applying makeup, and even if you aren't, your face is a great canvas to work with and learn how colors look and what different brushes do to your face.

4. It's fun to learn a new skill.

You can find just about anything on YouTube. Makeup tutorials are available in abundance. If you have to necessary tools and makeup, it can be fun to sit in front of a mirror and learn how to contour or apply eye shadow for the perfect smoky eye.

5. If you don't like makeup, don't wear it.

As cool as makeup can be, it can also be a lot of time, money and effort. If none of that sounds good to you, then by no means is it necessary for you to wear makeup.

Makeup is a choice we all get to make. Moral of the story, when it comes to makeup, or life in general, do what makes YOU the most happy. To those of you who love makeup, I hope your eyeliner is even. To those who don't, enjoy those extra minutes in bed.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
