NEW New Year's Resolutions

Have you lived up to the ones you made on New Year’s Eve?

New Year’s Eve was four months ago. FOUR MONTHS. Like many other college students, I made plans to be a better me. “I will exercise every day!” I thought. “I’m going to make a list of when all my assignments are due and I’ll continuously work on them so I don’t get behind!” Yeah, okay. It’s important to make resolutions for the new year. It helps keep you motivated to (try to) stick to a plan relating to your goals for the next 12 months. But do you ever really stick to the plan? I definitely do not. Now it’s four months in and I’m creating a new plan. These are my NEW New Year’s Resolutions.

1. Give the last few weeks of school your all.

There are only a few weeks left, which means that it’s almost SUMMER, WOO HOO! But that doesn’t mean that you should just forget about the crazy important history assignment that you’ve been working on all semester. Or that you should go out and party instead of studying for your last physics test because “hey, I’m not failing the class.”

2. Go to the gym (when and if you want).

Yeah, it’s important to exercise. But sometimes (most of the time) going to the gym can be a huge hassle, especially if you are “waaaay to busy with this homework assignment that I put off because I was watching Netflix.” On the other hand, exercising actually can help make you less stressed. It releases hormones or something. Look it up. So, if you are insanely stressed out, or if you ate four whole pizzas by yourself one night, maybe you should try going to the gym! (If you want).

3. Make a plan each day.

Instead of trying to plan out your entire year, (which, let’s be honest, you usually make it to day three and then get distracted) think about creating a plan for just one day at a time. Each morning, think about three things that you HAVE to do that day, and write them down. Even if it’s “brush my teeth, go to class, read two pages of this book I have to finish by Sunday.” Doing this will actually help you get more organized and feel less stressed.

4. Go to new places this summer.

Every summer I think to myself, “This is gonna be great! I’m so excited to go on adventures and experience new things!” When, in reality, my friends and I end up driving all over my town, finally arriving back at home with nothing but wasted gas. If you can relate, listen very carefully. We need to put an end to the random driving. We need to find cool places to go so we can Snapchat it and make other people jealous!

5. HAVE FUN.

It doesn't matter if you make New Year's Resolutions or not. The purpose of them is so that you can better yourself, but if you are constantly thinking about bettering yourself, it can get a little annoying. Sometimes you don't need to be better, you're doing just fine. The important thing is that you're having fun this year. It's almost the summer (YAY)! So the thing you should really be focused on is whether or not you are enjoying yourself!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
