I’m sure you’ve all seen these handsome gentlemen holding doors open all over campus, wearing their letters and stopping by all of the sororities to talk about who they are. The Odyssey has the scoop on the future of their chapter at Washington State!
A little bit of history on Phi Sigma Kappa: They were once here in 2006, and they occupied the house that the men of Theta Xi currently reside in. Unfortunately, their chapter was shut down due to low membership. However, the men of Phi Sigma Kappa plan on buying a house in the near future.
Dry or ‘Wet’? Phi Sigma Kappa is known as a wet house, however they will not be a 'wet' house if they decide to house freshmen. It also depends on what their alumni says, since technically they help pay for the house.
Philanthropy: Phi Sigma Kappa's main philanthropy is Special Olympics, in which they often, as a chapter, sponsor Special Olympic athletes.
How many members currently? There are currently 81 members, and the number is still growing! There are 72 chapters and 10 colonies across the United States, WSU being the 10th one!
What’s a colony? “It’s like the difference between JV and varsity,” Romarr says. A chapter is the established organization, where as a colony is a group of men who are interested in joining the chapter. They must complete a certain amount of community service hours, study table hours, follow the scholarship plans, etc.
Core values? Phi Sigma Kappa’s core values are to promote brotherhood, stimulate scholarship and devote character. In that order.
Why is Phi Sigma Kappa here at WSU? Romarr noticed that none of the fraternities at Shippensburg University embodied any of the qualities he had, so he looked into the core values of other fraternities. Phi Sigma Kappa automatically sparked his interest. He reached out to their headquarters in Indiana, and they flew out to him and discussed what it meant to be a true member of Phi Sigma Kappa. From there, Romarr founded a chapter at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. Now, he just gets to travel all over the U.S. and start new Phi Sigma Kappa chapters!
Keep an eye out for these fraternity gentlemen; they are a great group of men who plan on integrating themselves into our Greek system by attending social events, and showing their support through involving themselves in the philanthropies of other chapters!
A little bit about Romarr: Romarr is originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, and recently graduated from Shippensburg University in Spring 2014. He received a BA in Political Science and Anthropology, and is thinking about attending graduate school here at WSU!
Some quick facts:
