To My New Friend, Thank You

If I could only be half the friend you are...

Hey there friend!

First of all, I want to thank you for being my friend. You probably discovered that I was nothing short of insane the first moment we met. I'll be forever appreciative that you graciously accepted my weirdness and abstract ways of thinking from the get go, and in some ways, you've simply carried along with me.

In the short time that we have known each other, you've seen me when I'm flying high and also when I'm falling face first into the deepest and darkest of places. Most new people who see these polar opposites immediately run away. However, you've stuck with me through it all, which speaks volumes about your character. I appreciate you having my back and standing up for me when I really need it most. I will always do my best to give that in return.

One of the things I appreciate most about our new found friendship is how well we can collaborate as a team on almost any occasion. We are able to devise a game plan, divide and conquer, and can get things done whatever it takes. Sometimes we don't even have to talk to execute a plan, because we can read each other's minds and strangely finish each other's sentences (or say sentences at the exact same time with the exact same tone).

Thank you for bestowing your wisdom upon me. You've given me advice that I've carried with me every day. You've encouraged me in unimaginable ways and have guided me in a direction that allows me to live my life in a more positive light. You've helped me realize and accept some of my faults and how to improve them.

Thank you for all the material things as well. I can always count on you for a laugh or ten throughout the day. I know you're only a phone call away at any time of day when I need someone to lean on. If I need to talk in person, your door is always open. If I need a safe place to stay, you provide that. I appreciate all these things more than you will ever know. Even when we're up into the wee hours of the morning, you never show a sign of irritation and it eases my mind, even though I apologize a million times along the way (side note: thank you for accepting each apology).

We've only known each other for a little over a month and we've been able to do so much together. Thank you for reinventing my definition of a friendship and showing me what it's all about. Thank you for all the laughs, inside jokes, and precious memories during a tough summer. Thank you for giving me the drive to present a better version of myself. Thank you for showing me that the quality of a friendship always beats the quantity of time people know each other. Thank you for being my friend through the good and the bad.

I hope to be half the friend you are to me, but I don't think I could ever be as good as you are.

Sincerely,

The New Friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
