The change of policies in fraternity recruitment is unlike any IU has seen in years. The new formality rules regarding the process is a new concept to every frat boy on campus, but who said change was a bad thing?
Before, you had to know someone in a fraternity and party with them a little in order to be recruited. Whether they realized it or not, this put IU male Greeks at a disadvantage to their female counterparts.
For women at IU, each girl going through recruitment gets a peek into each and every sorority. We speak with many different girls in each chapter to get the feel of where we belong. This makes the stereotypes and preconceived thoughts about each chapter slowly fade as potential new members are given the opportunity to make decisions for themselves about Greek Life.
The method in which female recruitment operates gives IU women an unbiased way to make the decisions for themselves about where they belong in the Greek system. The emergence of this method into fraternity recruitment gives guys more of an opportunity to seek out their options instead of just opting with the fraternity where they know someone from their hometown.
Guys from each frat now serve as "Bro-gams," but instead of concealing their identity to the PNMs as the female Rho Gammas do, they wear their fraternity letters loud and proud. Each chapter explains its philanthropies and values, gives house tours if they have a house, and converses with the potential new members. Obviously we can assume these conversations are MUCH less formal than sorority recruitment conversation entails. Nonetheless, this new process opens up many new doors, literally, to the men at IU.
