Never Room With Your Best Friend

The biggest piece of advice people always give to you when you are picking a college roommate is not to room with your friends. And I fully intended to follow this advice until one of my best friends and I ended up as roommates. After nearly two semesters of living with my best friend, I can say it has been an adventure and one I wouldn't trade for the world.

Living with a close friend forces you to work out problems and deal with them because, after all, they are your friend, and it is worth it to take the time to fix things. I have gained so much more communication skills and the ability to speak my mind in an understanding way. We've had so many funny, weird moments that only best friends could share. We've had so many deep late night talks. Living with a good friend is challenging, rewarding, and just plain fun sometimes. For all of the times you get on each others nerves, you develop an understanding and share so many fun memories along the way. So here's to you, my oddball of a froommate, a list of my favorite moments from the year.

1. Thank you for tying me up in fits of laughter when I needed it most.

Walking in the room after a long day with a long list of things to do, sometimes the best medicine is a friend to make you laugh so hard you fall on the floor.

2. Understanding the struggle of climbing in the lofted bed.

"I feel like Gabby Douglas every time I get in and out of bed."

3. Get you a roommate who brings you shampoo to the bathroom.

You know you've found a good egg when, she'll drop her studies to answer your frantic text to bring you shampoo to the bathroom because you've forgotten.

4. Gelato sharing.

When you don't own a freezer, there is always the trouble of what to do with the rest of the gelato. I was blessed with a roommate who is so generous with her frozen cream products.

5. The spider incident.

One spider. Huge fangs. Very scared. 30 minutes wasted. Need I say more?

Here's to another two great semesters, KP! Thanks for all of the great memories. Also shout out to our honorary roommate and co-spider wrangler. You the best!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
