When I first watched the trailer for "Never Have I Ever," I thought it was just some teen show. But, out of boredom, I decided to watch it and I was proven wrong. This show is probably one of the best shows I've watched on Netflix for so many reasons.
This show was co-created by Mindy Kaling. Our main character Devi is a typical nerdy high school student. She plays the harp and has straight A's to keep her mom happy. But not everything about her life was perfect. Devi lost her father at one of her band concerts. This was something that affected her a lot and leads to her becoming paralyzed for a few months. The show didn't touch too much upon that part but focused more on when she recovered.
Devi has two best friends Fabiola and Eleanor. One is a drama nerd while the other is into robots. The three seem to be the best friends in the world and its nice to see how well they get along. Devi has never had her first kiss before and wants to but also wants to have sex. But not with just anyone she has her eye on the popular swimmer, Paxton. She explains to Fabiola and Elenor that they should be getting boyfriends this year. Devi set up her two friends with two boys while also trying to play the "long game" for Paxton.
It's clear that Devi also has a nemesis, Ben. They have been competing with each other there whole academic years. While watching it, it's clear there's something there. Devi and Paxton do eventually meet but things get weird. Those two have a rocky relationship and so does she and Ben.
But that's all I can tell you, I guess you're going to have to watch and see it for yourself.
That's a little bit of the plot without giving the whole story away. This show has so much cultural representation and it makes me so proud. First of all, the co-creator is a woman which is amazing. It wasn't stereotypical either. I feel like a lot of movies and shows with different backgrounds tend to make them stereotypical. This show is not just a teen show. It talks about so many important topics such as death, sex, sexuality, and family problems.
I highly recommend watching this show. Hopefully, Netflix gives us another season.
