Although Greeks attempt to make Greek life seem as if it has had positive effects on their own lives, we can all see through this façade and sadly we know this is all untrue.
Unlike the members of the Greek community, we know what Greek life is really about, I mean we’ve been educated of the terrible effects that being Greek has on a person’s life from the very reliable accounts of the all American movies that have played on our TV screens; yes, we’ve all seen the party scenes, we’re experts.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about let me refresh your memory. In most movies there’s this scene, where an unmanageable party takes place, the ones that people jump from rooftops into pools, and yes they almost always take place in a Fraternity house.
Hence, it’s no lie that the fundamentals of being a Greek rely on parties, drama and booze and to further support this here are 4 reasons why going Greek is a bad decision.
We Only Care About Ourselves:
The first and primary reason to never become a Greek is because frankly, we’re all selfish. I mean we dedicate most of our time to touching up our makeup, drinking and doing philanthropic work. Did you know that most large scale foundations are kept up and running because Greeks are their number one donors, donating more than a million dollars yearly? Greeks are also heavily involved in the community organizing events, walks, sales, volunteering and more. But who likes to be involved anyway, that’s so overrated.
Our Grades Are Terrible:
Being a Greek only requires you to have a minimum GPA of only 3.0 to join. Greeks typically have terrible grades and organizations never really check that either.
Did you know that Greeks must keep up their GPA and most Greeks are even on the Dean’s list? Yet, high grades are overrated, after all “C’s get degrees”.
It’s Basically Paying for Friends:
Greek life is made for rich people who are too lazy to make friends and have money so they decide to pay for theirs instead.
I mean dues go towards organizing events, trips and formals which members attend hence making many organizations dues all inclusive. But, who wants to make life long relationships anyway, friends come and go, it’s better not to get attached.
Most of Us Hate Each other, We ONLY Smile for The Camera:
In all honesty, most Greeks despise their brothers/sisters. I mean it’s not even people you choose, it’s just random. You rarely get to make life-long relationships, being able to find yourself picking your sister to be your bridesmaid, after all, you never liked anyone anyway.
Despite all stereotypes, Greek life has the largest and most positive impact on an individual’s life. It may not be for everyone yet it definitely does not live up to how negatively portrayed it is. Greek life teaches you discipline, allows you to build relationships and network and it motivates many members while keeping them academically in check. Personally, my experience with Greek life has been great, I won’t be dishonest and claim it’s been perfect, but it definitely has allowed me to grow as an individual and I know that these relationships I have made are not for college days alone.
