Alcohol - this substance, for one reason or another, has always been associated with growing up and having fun. Everywhere we look and hear, from TV shows to movies to music, alcohol is glorified.
I certainly don't buy into that and never will.
I’m a Christian, but that has nothing to do with me not wanting to drink alcohol. I know plenty of Christians who drink, and that’s perfectly fine, so long as they do it legally and without becoming drunk. There is nothing inherently wrong with alcohol; like with most things in life, moderation is key. Yet, the life of sobriety is what I choose now and what I will always choose.
My issue with alcohol is that it’s just not necessary for anything. As far as I’m concerned, it serves no real purpose. I’ve never tried it, but many people I have spoken with have said that most alcoholic drinks aren't even enjoyable. It’s an unnecessary extra cost as alcohol certainly is not cheap. I don’t need alcohol to have a good time, and I certainly don't need it for an excuse to meet with people. There is no actual health benefit to drinking alcohol, except for maybe red wine which can help the heart; even then, I don’t need it when I can just eat healthily and exercise.
Some people use alcohol as a means for escape and unwinding - that escape only comes through impairing your own judgment, and only provides a temporary relief. Also, alcohol is notorious for causing people to not be able to control themselves. Drunks make poor decisions; I almost died after being hit by a drunk driver. Of course, not every drunk makes horrific decisions, but rarely does a drunk make a smart or wise decision. There’s a reason why so many people have embarrassing and stupidly fun stories from when they were drunk.
Am I just being uptight, unreasonable, or stiff? Maybe. As of now, though, I have yet to be presented with any possible good reason for why I should want to drink. There is no special benefit found only in alcohol. There are better avenues in life to which I can invest my time, money and energy.
