More often than not when I hear the words “revival” or “remake” I think ,”Ugh Hollywood leave it alone it was perfect the way it was.” But earlier in the week when I heard that Gilmore Girls was being revived I squealed, headed over to Netflix for a bingfeast, and as I listened to that familiar theme song felt compelled to tell you all why this is awesome.
- Awesome Characters: In a world of Real Housewives and Gossip Girl, Rory Gilmore was a smart girl to look up to. The witty, book obsessed, aspiring reporter was a breath of fresh air. She never dumbed herself down or tried hiding how smart she was, she was modest, and ultimately very human. With characters like Lorelei and Rory we got to see female characters who were funny, smart, complicated, and flawed grow.
- Body Positivity: Gilmore girls had a wide rang of women that were different shapes and sizes. They dated, they fell in love, they were happy.
- It’s hilarious: Not every show can balance being funny and serious but Gilmore Girls did. From whatever job Kirk was doing badly, to Taylor's Town Meetings (that man had a lot of time on his hands), to tension filled Friday Night Dinners Gilmore Girls could make you cry one minute and laugh so hard it hurts the next.
- The Relationships: Relationships are complicated. From Lane to Lorelei we were reminded that sometimes the people who should love us the most are our harshest critics. And they can also make us feel like screaming (there were actually several episodes dedicated that). But over the seasons on Gilmore Girls we learned that just because a relationship is difficult, that doesn’t mean it’s hopeless. Lorelei went from only seeing her parents on major holidays to (grudgingly) having a real relationship with them.
- It was sex-positive (mostly): Lane chose to wait until she married and her decision was respected. Rory didn’t, and although her choice in partners was sometimes questionable her choices were respected. Miss Patty even (possibly) had quite a few paramours. Gilmore Girls didn't slut shame.
- The Ending: Everyone has a show they’d loved from the beginning that started going in a direction they weren’t happy with. Gilmore Girls fans are no exception. When Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband (the creators) left the show, the quality of writing changed, and not necessarily for the better (Logan was wrong for Rory, they should have broken up for good way before season seven). I mean unless you liked the break up and marriage that must not be named that took up a lot of Season 7. Every once in a while a show ends in ways fans are unhappy with, but how often do you get a second chance? A chance to see Rory being a reporter? For more Friday Night Dinners? For Luke and Lorelei? For more Town Meetings? I'll say it again: This is awesome!
