Throughout the series known as “Game of Thrones,” we are exposed to treachery, righteousness, and of course, death. Through all of this we try to attach ourselves to some sort of heroic hero; The individual who will bring good to Westeros and save the realm. While it’s hard to believe George RR Martin would ever allow for some happiness, in this case, he will. Also as always, if you are not up to date with everything, be warned; There are plenty of spoilers up ahead.
Now the savior isn’t Daenerys Targaryen, she is the the main force of evil in the show (As I explained in my previous article). Our savior is none other than the bastard from the north who’s not actually a bastard, Jon Snow; Or should I say, Jon (Jaehaerys?) Stark Targaryen, first of his name. Not only is he a right choice to be a leader, but he is born into that role. Jon is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, meaning he is the true heir to the Iron Throne. Would Jon want to be king? No. Would he still take the throne? Yes. But why? Well Jon has been pushed into leadership roles by his peers before, even though he doesn’t care for it. Jon has a good conscience, and does what he thinks is best for the realm, and the people that live in it. If the realm believes he should be king, he’ll become king (The season finale for Season 6 shows Jon becoming the King in the North, and he didn’t chose that role, the people did).
Now besides the fact that he embodies the will of the realm, he also embodies the whole book series. Jon is a song of ice and fire, the meeting of a Stark and a Targaryen, the living symbol of a peace between two warring houses. Jon is has the ability to bring people together, whether it’s the Knight’s Watch and the wildlings, or the wildlings and the northern houses; Jon creates and solidifies alliances so that people will stop inflicting pain on one another, making him the most noble man in this game for the throne. The people love him, bow to him, see him as someone who will guide them through the darkness; Jon Snow will be the one to sit upon the Iron Throne and win it all.
Let’s look at Jon’s claim to the throne, considering he is the son of the true heir, Rhaegar Targaryen. Now once others learn of his true heritage, he not only will still hold the support of the North (He is still a Stark, and a true Stark; As long as Rhaegar did hold a secret wedding with Lyanna, which most likely did happen, Jon is legitimate and the one true heir.), but he also will gain the support of people in the South (This is due to the fact that many will see that he has a stronger claim than Daenerys, and also considering Jon is honorable while Daenerys uses death as her tool of manipulation.). With a stronger claim than Daenerys, and him being one of the most liked in the Six Kingdoms (Let’s be fair, the North did truly secede and won’t rejoin unless Jon or another Stark sits on the throne) it’s clear that Jon will be the man to win the game.
Jon’s birth was anticipated for months, and planned out to ensure his safety and survival. Why else would Ser Arthur Dayne be at the Tower of Joy instead of defending his king? Why would Rhaegar rush to confront Robert’s men and give his life? Lyanna and Rhaegar wanted to make sure their son would live, that he would carry on under the guidance of Eddard Stark, Lyanna’s trusted brother. Ned would be able to keep Jon safe under the identity of a bastard son, and as long as Jon lives, so does his prophecy. Now you’re probably wondering, what prophecy? Well there is the very obvious Azor Ahai prophecy that Jon fits (He was reborn amongst Smoke and Salt; The Red Lady and Davos Seaworth, he has the Blood of a Dragon, in the books he even has dreams about wielding a burning sword which most likely is Lightbringer), however Jon fulfills his own prophecy that was created when Robert’s Rebellion hit. The Seven Kingdoms would not be able to hold forever under the rule of the Targaryen’s “pure” bloodline. Instead, the needed to be held together by holding the North and the South. Two opposite forces that compliment one another, and can provide under just and fair rule. Rhaegar and Lyanna both knew their son would be that chosen hero; A Stark and Targaryen come together in harmony, bearing a child who is honorable and just, but can also be stern and powerful. This is what I like to call The King of Ice and Fire Prophecy (Super original name, I know), that one day there will be a ruler who can unite and keep the peace between the North and the South, who will be loved by the people, and who will save Westeros from the devastation it’s been plagued with for so long.
Jon was destined for greatness the second he was born; I mean he even came back from the dead to fulfill his own prophecy, talk about dedication. He might not see himself as a leader, and he might question himself constantly, but his inner desire to always be a Stark brought him this far, and once he finds out his true parentage and that not only is he a true Stark, but also a Targaryen, that’s going to awaken the fire with him. The bittersweet ending promised by George RR Martin will be Jon killing Daenerys and sitting upon the Iron Throne is a burned keep. The same vision Daenerys had back in Season 2 when she was in the house of the undying; A burned keep and an Iron Throne covered in Snow.
Also I highly suggest watching this fantastic video created by Zurik 23M on YouTube, because this truly will convince you that Jon Snow is the one true king.
