In today's day in age, we have seen how privilege has taken a toll on society.
We have seen that privilege is not always earned, but just handed over to some people. In some instances, we have also seen that those who are privileged take advantage of this special right and have used it in negative manners. We also see those who do not take advantage of this special right and use it for a positive stance.
Privileged people, many times, are viewed in a negative lighting. Titles in financial standings, a certain race, a certain gender, and so on have been noted as privileged for one reason or another. Though in many cases it is true that a male has more rights and certain privileges over a female, that does not mean that a female in today's society may not be privileged as well.
What I am trying to explain is that many of us are privileged in one way or another and do not even realize it.
Not to the extent that one may like to be, but that does not mean that you cannot reach that privileged standard either. There are many categories that go into being privileged, for example, being able-bodied, your economic or social class, higher education, gender identity, sexual orientation, and racial identity.
As an educated Latina, I am privileged. I am aware of this, I accept this, and I actually am very proud of this.
I am privileged thanks to my parents who had to go through many hardships to get where they are today and to get me to where I am today. They started from nothing, and now have three of their six children standing tall with university degrees, which is an amazing thing to be a part of.
Being and accepting that I am a privileged human being creates a far bigger responsibility for me.
As a privileged, educated Latina, I am responsible to speak for my people, I am responsible to speak for females, and I am responsible to speak for those who are not privileged. I may be noted as a privileged human being, but I do not come from a privileged family. Making me realize that being privileged does not only mean I have an advantage, but I have an opportunity that many do not have, and that is to advocate for those who are in need of it.
Being privileged is a privilege in itself.
I think it is important to check your privilege and note if you are taking advantage of this opportunity and making a difference in the world. Think about it, if more of those who are privileged in some sort of way could use their special right for the better of society, many positive changes could come from all of this.
I do not believe that the world would become a utopian society, but it is important to shed light on the responsibility we as privileged people carry, and that we note that many of us have the power to make a difference in someone or many people's lives.
